* January – March (Southern Serengeti, Tanzania): The herds occupy the short-grass plains, with peak calving season occurring around February.
* April – May (Central/Western Serengeti, Tanzania): The herds move north-west, often forming long columns, accompanied by heavy rains.
* June – July (Western/Northern Serengeti, Tanzania): The herds move towards the Grumeti and Mara Rivers, preparing for the challenging crossings.
* July – October (Maasai Mara, Kenya): The animals cross the Mara River into Kenya, staying in the Maasai Mara before starting their journey back south.
* November – December (Southern Serengeti, Tanzania): The herds return south, traveling through the eastern Serengeti to begin the cycle again
