The forest floor in Kibale is damp enough that you feel it through your boots before you hear anything at all.
Then the canopy erupts. A distant scream that sounds almost human, and the whole group stops walking without anyone saying a word. 🌿🐒
A family of five who traveled with us in July had never tracked chimpanzees before. They assumed it would feel like gorilla trekking.
It does not.
Chimps move constantly, swinging branch to branch thirty feet up, so the guide is reading movement and sound the entire time, adjusting the route on instinct built over years, not a map.
They ended up an hour past their scheduled tracking window because the group simply would not leave. Nobody complained about the extra hour of hiking back in fading light.
Kibale permits are far less scarce than gorilla permits, but tracking windows are capped daily, and December is when family groups tend to book both parks in one trip.

🌊 There is a sound at Murchison Falls no photo can capture.

The Victoria Nile, one of the widest rivers in Africa, forced through a gap in the rock barely seven meters wide. What comes out the other side is not a waterfall, it is an explosion.

Most people picture one photo stop. Murchison actually gives you a full day of completely different worlds.

🛥️ The boat cruise from Paraa, three hours upstream toward the base of the falls, past hippos, Nile crocodiles sunning on the banks, and elephant herds coming down to drink at the water's edge.

🦁 Game drives above the falls across open savannah, home to lion, buffalo, and the largest population of Rothschild's giraffe left in the wild.

🥾 The hike to the top of the falls, close enough to feel the spray on your face.

🐒 Chimpanzee tracking in nearby Budongo Forest.

🦏 Walking on foot alongside white rhino at Ziwa Sanctuary, a species that was extinct in the wild here until reintroduction brought them back.

Thirteen years running Uganda safaris and Murchison still gets me every single time.
