Deep in the Muav Gorge, this rapid is run right up against a cliff face, through a massive wave train culminating in a narrow “soft spot” between a massive hole and a crashing lateral wave. But don’t be fooled by the terminology—this “soft spot” is still a wall of water!

Ever wonder how massive, 20ft+ sweep boats loaded with over a thousand pounds of gear make it down the steep and technical whitewater of the Middle Fork Salmon?

Unique to the Middle Fork Salmon due to the river’s steep and continuous gradient, modern sweep boats descended from the wooden sweep scows used by early river runners on Idaho’s Salmon River in the late 19th century. Instead of using oars to propel the boat down river, sweep boats use their weight and the gradient of the river to build momentum - the sweep blades are just for steering.

For OARS, the Roadless Rule isn’t an abstract policy debate. The impacts of decisions made in the forest don’t stop at the forest. They flow downstream.

The watersheds protected by the Roadless Rule feed rivers that provide drinking water, sustain fish and wildlife, support local economies, and create the wild character that makes the places where we guide so special.

Now, the USDA is moving to roll back these protections across nearly 45 million acres.

Join us in speaking out against the Roadless Rule during the public comment period that expires 10/6 and urge the USDA to keep these protections in place.
