Photos don't do tidewater glaciers justice.

You hear them before you see them clearly, cracking and groaning as bus-sized chunks of ice calve into the water. Then you round the corner in your kayak and the entire glacier face fills your field of view.

Blue ice, brown rock, white spray. This was the reaction. Arms wide, standing on the shore of Icy Bay with ice chunks scattered at her feet.

That's the trip right there.

Sometimes the simplest things work so well.

Two polar bears walking along the shoreline.

Ice in the bay indicates its the beginning of freeze-up. Snow on the shoreline says "Winter's Coming".

Polar bears are beautiful.

We thought we were done.
The sun was almost behind the ridge.
Camp was a mile off.
Cards were nearly full.

Then she walked into the channel and the light fell apart in our favor. We spent another forty-five minutes in the dirt.

The bear didn't do anything dramatic. She just stood there, fishing slowly, lit from behind with that low gold that doesn't last more than a few minutes a year.

Sometimes the photo is just the light on the bear.

We took the picture and went to camp.

Mount St. Elias is 18,008 feet tall and sits roughly ten miles from the Gulf of Alaska. That makes it one of the most dramatic vertical rises on Earth, from sea level to summit in a single sweep.

This aerial over Icy Bay puts it in perspective: the turquoise water, the glaciers pouring off the flanks, the sheer wall of the St. Elias Range stacking up behind it.

This is the coastline of Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. Thirteen million acres, and most of it looks exactly like this.

If you’ve followed us for a while, you know we’re a small team. We spend months of the year knee-deep in mud or chasing the light in places most tourists can't find on a map.

Because we’re small, our website can sometimes feel like a treasure hunt. I realized last week that if you wanted to see all our upcoming 2026/27 tours, you had to click through twelve different pages. That’s a waste of your time.

So, I locked myself in the office and built this: The 2026/27 Photo Tour ebook. > It’s every destination, every date, and every raw itinerary we have planned for the next two years, bound into one immaculate little eBook. No corporate fluff; just the trips, the gear we recommend, and the shots we’re going after.

Grab a copy, put your feet up, and start dreaming.

Icy Bay sits on the Gulf of Alaska coast, backed by some of the biggest glaciers in North America. On calm evenings the icebergs drift through water so still they look frozen in place.

The sun drops behind the St. Elias Range, and for about twenty minutes the clouds light up like this.

No filter, no editing trick. Just a bay full of ice and a sky doing what Alaska skies do in August.
