At age 89, Opal Lee began a different kind of journey — walking from her home in Fort Worth, Texas, toward Washington, D.C., to raise awareness for her lifelong dream: making Juneteenth a national holiday. 

Supporters joined her in a series of 2.5-mile walks along the way — a powerful symbol of the two and a half years it took for the Emancipation Proclamation to reach Texas after it was issued. 

Juneteenth honors that day in 1865 when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston to declare freedom for the last enslaved people in the U.S. Thanks to Ms. Lee’s tireless advocacy, it became a national holiday in 2021. 

Today, we recognize Juneteenth as a day of liberation, reflection, and shared responsibility — a reminder that the journey toward equality is one we all walk together.
