Be Bear Aware!

Mount Desert Island is black bear habitat, much of which is protected by Acadia National Park. Spring and summer are periods of increased bear activity, which can increase the potential for human-bear encounters.

Bears that are habitualized to human food become desensitized to people, which can change their natural behaviors and pose a risk to people.

The National Park Service encourages visitors and residents to help prevent bears from becoming habitualized to human food.

Be sure to:
• Keep food indoors or in secure areas, such as a locked car when tent camping.
• Dispose of trash in secure receptacles.
• Clean grills and outdoor cooking equipment to reduce food odors.

As of today, April 17, carriage roads are open to walkers only. All carriage roads remain closed to bicyclists.

During this period of spring thaw, the carriage roads are especially fragile and susceptible to impacts that accelerate erosion. Thank you all for helping the park to protect these special cultural resources!

To provide peregrine falcons adequate space for nesting, the National Park Service temporarily closed areas including Jordan Cliffs Trail, Precipice Trail, and Valley Cove Trail in Acadia National Park until further notice starting March 1. In addition, the parking lot for the Precipice Trail will remain closed to vehicles until further notice. These annual closures protect the peregrine falcons from inadvertent human disturbance or harassment during the nesting period.
