Where you stop matters as much as where you go.

High on the Glacier du Géant, July. We took our break here on purpose, well clear of the rockfall zone behind us.

Later in the day we watched two people stop and break right under it.

Rockfall doesn’t always give a warning, so the only choice you get is where you’re standing.

Summer 2027 planning is open.

Tracks don’t tell you everything, but the avalanche does.

Tuckerman Ravine, mid march last winter, on AIARE_Official level 1 avalanche course. A party of two triggered an avalanche earlier in the day. Everyone was OK and we talked with them as they were heading out.

The slide was bull’s-eye data: clear evidence that the snow was unstable. Other groups kept heading that way anyways.

We stopped and talked it through with the group: terrain use, planning, adapting a plan, and making sound decisions in the face of new data.

We went to another aspect and lower angle, terrain.

What makes a perfect tie in?

We coach new climbers to look for four specific things.

Perrons Traverse, July. We passed 24 people.

Everyone was following the line up from the col at the bottom of the rappels. I saw a line that climbed out to the right, well clear of everyone else, so we weren’t adding any hazard to the already chaotic scene.

We climbed way right, joined the ridge, and pressed on with the day.

Half of them followed behind us.

Hybrid AIARE Level 1, Mount Washington. A review from last winter.

“Each part of the course contributed to a deeper understanding of decision-making in the mountains, not just the individual skills.” (Matt)

A framework, not a rulebook. So you understand what’s going on, not just what to do.

Summit cone of Mount Washington, mid-April. Skis on our backs, crampons on, conditions that looked horrible.

Nobody would have picked this day for skiing. But day two was calling for warming temperatures and full sun, and I knew we just needed to be patient and let them work on the snow.

We pushed on.

Corn isn’t luck. It’s warmth, sun, and knowing when to be there.

Back to basics. The first thing you should do when arriving at an anchor is clip yourself in!

Simple, but I have recently watched many people forget this very task.

Summit of the Aiguille du Tour. One spin, and you’re looking from Switzerland to Mount Blanc.

This is one day out of a summer in the Alps— the kind of view you only get by putting the work in to stand there. If a week like this is something you’ve been thinking about, this is the season to start planning it.

DM me if you’re interested— I’ll walk you through what a trip like this looks like.

Overnight ski trip to the Mount Washington Observatory Mount Washington Observatory. Recent rain, then a refreeze— conditions seemed about as bad as they get.

We got up and down the mountain by non-standard routes to work around it. At one point we needed to lower everyone down a steep icy pitch. No hesitation, no questions— one by one everyone got down the slope and we kept moving.

Hard fought for sure, crampons on more than skis for a while— but we got some good turns in and everyone got down safely
