We often see newer crack climbers always jamming thumbs down.

Thumbs up or thumbs down both work. The trick is learning that they function like different tools and one is not always the right choice.

Pull cords can become a desperately tangled mess

Using your backpack, stack the rope directly into it to keep it contained and tidy!

There is a lot of nuance and detail that goes into placing traditional climbing equipment.

The very general statement I like to make about placing small gear is that it is objectively harder to visually inspect the placement.

Can small gear be strong?

Absolutely.

Can you miss a small detail that leads to gear ripping out?

Two things that I try to do when leaving the anchor on a multi pitch route

1- clip the anchor before coming off my Clovehitch to help prevent a hard fall.

2- look to place protection early off the anchor.

Pull cords…suck to pull…

They can be skinny, slick and stiff.

Using something like a micro traction, makes it a lot easier to pull it back down to you.
