Did you know Fort Fremont was built to protect the U.S. Naval Station at Port Royal?

At the end of the 19th century, Port Royal Sound was home to an important naval station and the only dry dock south of Norfolk capable of servicing the Navy’s modern battleships and heavy cruisers.

Fort Fremont was constructed on Saint Helena Island as part of a new generation of coastal defenses, standing guard over the waterways leading to the naval station.
More than a century later, much of that story can still be explored right here in Beaufort County.

History is closer than you think at Fort Fremont.
