What side did the Moravians of Bethabara take during the American Revolution?

This question is a difficult one to answer, because Moravian pacifism was not a codified principle of the church in the 18th century. Moravian Leaders and practitioners differed in their interpretation of the pacifist principles taught in the New Testament, with some believing strict adherence to non-violence was key, while others thought self-defense was acceptable.

This led to different Moravians having different views throughout the Revolutionary period, and caused great confusion amongst their neighbors. One of these neighbors was Gideon Wright, who would go on to be a major Loyalist leader as the war progressed.

“Feb. 1. Mr. Gideon Wright was here, to find out with which party we hold. He said he had orders from the Governor to make this investigation throughout the country. He went from here to Guilford County.”

Mr. Wright found the Moravians unwilling to take a side on February 2, 1776.

Bethania Roads Update:

While Main Street is slowly become safe for passage, our side roads are still mostly solid sheets of ice. Bethania Rural Hall Road is “open” yet remains extremely dangerous for travel. Residents report seeing multiple incidents along the road each day, and currently there is a truck, with a trailer trying to back his way off the road to safety.

Avoid this road if you find yourself out searching for milk and bread today!
Safe travels.
