Riverstone Outfitters Montana outfitter and guide service. MT Outfitter # 63826

Jackson's goal: whatever river or state you fish next, even with a different guide, you should leave his boat knowing the technique, the etiquette and the basics.

He won't pressure you, though. Want to fish hard? He'll fish hard. Want to catch a few, hang out and learn? That's a good day too. Either way, he's working to teach you, find fish, or both.

"We're gonna get a quality day on the water."

Fish hard or hang out? Tell us which kind of day you want in the comments.

"Patrick was our guide. Exceptionally knowledgeable about the river, where to go, hot spots to look for."

Two anglers from Iowa, one day with Patrick, and plenty of fish between them. "Great group of guys to hang out with. They really know their stuff."

Sam loved where he was in life, working on a small ski mountain in New Hampshire. A guide friend named Tom kept telling him to go West.

Then another friend, Bob, overheard the conversation, called an outfitter he knew in Montana, and Sam got a job offer he couldn't refuse. That was spring 2021.

"To be able to do your dream every day as a job is a pretty special thing."

"Ozzy was great. Great guy. Taught us a lot on the trip. It was so worth it."

Friends from Mobile, Alabama floated the Flathead with Oz, and one of them landed the first fish of her life on a fly.

"My favorite river in Montana is the Clark Fork."

Trout in the riffles in the morning, smallmouth bass in the afternoon. The lower Clark Fork fishes nearly year-round and has a little of everything: riffles, slower runs, and deep pools.

Jackson guided in Colorado and at a lodge in Northern California, running both hunting and fishing trips. Then he wanted a life change.

He moved up here, met Nathan, and has been on a lot of water and with a lot of people since. "It's been a wild ride, a good journey, but we're still gonna ride the wave and keep going."

Ever thought about moving to Montana? Tell us in the comments.

"It was a big competition between watching the fly and whether or not the fish took the fly, or looking at the scenery."

She's fished a lot of places in this country, and she says nothing beats Montana. The highlight was she and her fishing partner hooking fish at the same time. Double trouble.

"It's just an absolute genuine jewel of Montana."

Guide Spotlight: Patrick.

He grew up in western New York by the Adirondacks, chasing steelhead, king salmon and big browns off Lake Ontario. About ten years of guiding later, he fell for Montana and hasn't left.

His style: "Keep it light, keep it fun. You usually get more bang for your buck if you just kind of have fun with it."

Call (406) 607-1165 and ask for Patrick.

Jackson's boat tour: an Adipose Flow skiff-style drift boat, made in Helena, Montana. It's bombproof and handles the wind.

His Flathead setup:

- Dry-dropper: 9½-foot 5- and 6-weights
- Dry fly: 9-foot 5-weights

Which rod comes out depends on the day and what the fish are doing.

Booking is simple. Send us a message and Nathan will answer your questions and match you with a guide. Your guide calls a few days before to get you dialed in.

"He was a very good guide. Very instructional."

A couple came out from Wisconsin for their first time fly fishing in Montana, with Sam rowing. The verdict: personable, knowledgeable about the river, and a guide who teaches while you fish.

First Montana trip? A guided float is the shortcut to learning how this water fishes. Drop your questions in the comments and we'll answer them.
