In 2014, the City of Boulder passed a strict Bear Protection Ordinance to prevent black bears from foraging in urban areas. While the pedestrian mall sits just east of the primary bear-activity zones, the city spent thousands of dollars to install roughly 100 heavy-duty, bear-proof trash and recycling containers all along Pearl Street. each bin cost about $1000.

In 2012, Boulder became one of the first major public municipalities to introduce public compost bins directly alongside standard trash and recycling receptacles. Today, about 60 of the Pearl Street units feature that distinct third bin specifically for food waste and compostable coffee cups.

The Cottonwood Little Library: The mature trees on Pearl Street are deeply beloved by residents. In 2026, when an iconic, massive cottonwood tree on the mall finally reached the end of its life and had to be cut down, the community couldn't bear to let it completely disappear. Local woodworkers and tree specialists transformed its remaining stump into an elaborate "Little Library" box. The structure features shelves crafted directly out of the repurposed cottonwood pieces, matching the architecture of the surrounding mall.

Long before the street was blocked off for pedestrians in 1977, it was a dusty dirt road. In the 1880s, as the town evolved out of rough wood structures into stone and brick buildings, the city shipped in maple saplings by train. The entire block around the historic Boulder County Courthouse square was lined with these saplings to offer shade for horses, wagons, and early shoppers
