In 1984, we chose to construct our nursery on the grounds of the McKnight-Hairston homestead. We found the ruins of the stone kitchen to be the perfect setting for our old roses.
The restored kitchen is now the centerpiece of our "kitchen" garden; one of many themed gardens you will find at the Antique Rose Emporium.

Today the stone kitchen remains, fully restored and houses gardening hardware for sale.

๐Ÿ‚ Zones 5 & 6, This Reminder Is For You! ๐ŸŒน

Dreaming about a garden filled with beautiful rose blooms next spring? Now is the time to start planning! ๐ŸŒฑโœจ

If you're gardening in USDA Zones 5 or 6, don't wait too long to get your roses in the ground.

๐ŸŒน Order your roses to arrive this September, so they have time to establish their roots before winter arrives and enter dormancy with a strong foundation.

Think of it as giving your roses a head start before the cold settles in. โ„๏ธ๐ŸŒฟ

๐Ÿ“… Zones 5 & 6: Aim for a September arrival and planting, otherwise, schedule your planting time/delivery for springtime (late April-May).

The goal isn't simply to get a rose planted, it's to give it the time it needs to settle in and prepare for its first winter in your garden.

And while you're planning, this is a great time to:
๐ŸŒฟ Prepare your planting areas
โ˜€๏ธ Evaluate sunlight and spacing
๐ŸŒน Build your rose wishlist
๐Ÿ‚ Get your garden ready for fall planting

Spring may feel a long way off right now, but the garden you're dreaming about in April starts with the work you do this fall. ๐ŸŒนโœจ

๐Ÿ’ฌ Zones 5 & 6 gardeners, what roses are you hoping to plant this fall?

๐ŸŒน๐Ÿ”Ž Guess That Rose! ๐Ÿ”Ž๐ŸŒน

Can you guess which rose we're featuring this week? ๐Ÿ‘€๐ŸŒฟ

Here are your clues:

๐ŸŒน Hint #1: This rose is known for its rich, deep red blooms. โค๏ธ
๐ŸŒฟ Hint #2: It has a compact, upright growth habit that makes it a great choice for adding bold color to the garden.
โœจ Hint #3: Its blooms keep coming throughout the growing season, bringing plenty of color when you want it most.

Think you've figured it out?

๐ŸŒน A.R.E. Legacy Roses: Roses With a Story to Tell ๐ŸŒฟ

Some roses are beautiful.
Some roses are historic.
And some become part of the story of Antique Rose Emporium itself. โค๏ธ

Our A.R.E. Legacy Roses Collection celebrates roses connected to our history of preservation, discovery, and breeding, and the people who have helped shape what we grow and share today.

One of the most important chapters began in 1992, when A.R.E. founder Mike Shoup launched the Pioneer Rose Series with the introduction of Caroline Hairston. ๐ŸŒน

That first Pioneer rose marked the beginning of A.R.E.โ€™s journey into breeding roses specifically for gardens like ours; bringing together beauty, fragrance, garden performance, and the spirit of discovery that has always been at the heart of Antique Rose Emporium.

And here's a special piece of that history: Caroline Hairston is still offered exclusively at our Nursery & Display Gardens. ๐ŸŒฟ๐ŸŒน

๐ŸŒน Which rose in the A.R.E. Legacy Collection has a special place in your garden? Tell us its story below. ๐Ÿ’š

๐Ÿ“ธ๐ŸŒน Garden Inspiration: From Your Gardens to Ours ๐ŸŒน๐Ÿ“ธ

One of our favorite things about being part of the A.R.E. community is seeing our roses find their way into gardens all across the country. ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ’š

Today's customer garden gallery takes us from Texas to Missouri to Washington, showing just how beautifully these roses can become part of different landscapes and growing spaces.

๐ŸŒน Mrs. B. R. Cant โ€” Anna, Texas

Different gardens. Different climates. Different gardeners. But the same love of roses! ๐ŸŒน

Thank you to everyone who takes the time to share your gardens with us. Your photos are a wonderful reminder that the roses we grow here can become part of something much bigger once they make their way home.

๐Ÿ“ธ Want to see YOUR garden featured?

We'd love to see what you're growing, where you're growing it, and how your roses are becoming part of your garden story. ๐ŸŒฟ๐ŸŒน

๐ŸŒน๐Ÿ“– A.R.E. Legacy Spotlight: Gideon Lincecum ๐Ÿ“–๐ŸŒน

Some roses carry more than beauty- they carry history.
Gideon Lincecum is one of those roses.

Named in honor of Gideon Lincecum, a fascinating 19th-century Texas naturalist, physician, and pioneer, this rose connects the garden to a much larger story of exploration, observation, and the natural world! You can learn more about this man's fascinating life story here: https://txmn.org/glc/about/gideon-lincecum/

And that feels especially fitting for a rose preserved through the work of gardeners who believe that old and historic plants are worth protecting; not simply because they're beautiful, but because they help us remember where we've come from.

That's what makes preserving these roses so meaningful to us at A.R.E. ๐ŸŒน

We're not simply growing plants.; we're helping keep pieces of living history in cultivation.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Do you have a historic rose in your garden whose story means as much to you as its flowers? We'd love to hear about it.

๐Ÿงฌ๐ŸŒน Inside Our Breeding Program ๐ŸŒน๐Ÿงฌ

What does it take to create a rose worthy of becoming an A.R.E. rose?
A LOT more than simply crossing two beautiful flowers. ๐ŸŒน๐Ÿ‘€

Our breeding work is driven by a search for roses that bring together the qualities gardeners value most, while also helping us preserve and continue the story of roses for future generations.

We're looking for things like:
๐ŸŒฟ Disease resistance
๐ŸŒธ Beautiful form
๐Ÿ‘ƒ Exceptional fragrance
๐ŸŒน Repeat blooming
โ˜€๏ธ Strong garden performance
๐Ÿ“– Historical significance & preservation

And sometimes, we're looking for combinations that haven't quite existed before.
This process takes patience. It takes observation. It takes growing, evaluating, selecting, and sometimes waiting years to see whether a promising rose truly has what it takes.
Because when we introduce a new rose, we aren't just asking: โ€œIs it pretty?โ€
We're asking: โ€œIs this a rose worth growing, sharing, and remembering?โ€ ๐ŸŒน

That's the heart of our breeding program, and part of what keeps the future of rose gardening growing.

๐Ÿ’ฌ If YOU could breed your dream rose, what would it look and smell like?

Tell us everything. Color, size, fragrance, bloom form, thorns, habit; we want to hear your ultimate rose wish list! ๐Ÿ‘‡๐ŸŒน

Swipe all the way to the end for our special guest appearance. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Come see whatโ€™s blooming for yourself! Weโ€™d love to have you wander the gardens with us. ๐ŸŒน

๐Ÿ‚๐ŸŒน Is Your Garden Ready for Fall? ๐ŸŒน๐Ÿ‚

Fall planting season will be here before we know it, and while we're all still waiting for these temperatures to cool down, there's plenty you can do now to get your garden ready. ๐ŸŒฟ

Consider this your fall gardening checklist:

โ˜‘๏ธ Evaluate your existing roses
Take a look at what's thriving, what needs a little extra attention, and what spaces might be ready for something new.

โ˜‘๏ธ Prepare your planting areas
Start clearing beds, improving your soil, and getting those future planting spots ready.

โ˜‘๏ธ Build your fall wishlist ๐ŸŒน
You know that rose you've been thinking about for months? Go ahead. Add it to the list. ๐Ÿ˜‰

โ˜‘๏ธ Check your USDA Hardiness Zone
Knowing your zone can help you choose varieties that are well-suited to your growing conditions and understand your ideal planting window.

The best gardens aren't always planned at the last minute. A little preparation now can make planting season SO much more exciting when the time finally comes. ๐Ÿ‚๐ŸŒฑ

๐Ÿ’ฌ What's on YOUR fall gardening to-do list?

Are you expanding a bed, planting your first rose, adding natives, starting a veggie garden, or making room for just one more plant? ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿ˜‚
