🍂⏰ Fall Back, Garden Friends! Daylight Saving Time Ends Today! 🌿

Today we turn our clocks back one hour, and while that extra hour of sleep sounds lovely, our gardens will be feeling the change, too! 🌅

Shorter days and earlier sunsets are a gentle reminder that the garden is moving into a different rhythm. Even here in Texas, where autumn can still bring warm afternoons, the changing daylight is a cue to slow down, observe, and prepare for the weeks ahead.

🌹 So, what does the time change mean for gardeners?
🌤️ Make the most of morning light. If you usually garden after work, you may need to shift some tasks to the morning or weekends as evenings get darker earlier.
💧 Check your watering routine. Cooler temperatures and less intense sunlight can mean soil stays moist longer. Check the soil before watering instead of sticking rigidly to a summer schedule.
🍂 Keep an eye on fallen leaves. A little leaf litter can support garden life, but remove heavy, wet piles from around plants when needed to help prevent lingering moisture and disease issues.

Some garden stories are about the plants. Others are about the people, places, and passions that bring an entire gardening movement to life. This fall, we're looking forward to hearing one of those stories from Greg Grant!

An award-winning horticulturist, author, and land steward, Greg serves as the Smith County horticulturist with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, where he also coordinates the Smith County Master Gardener volunteer program. His work and writing reflect a deep passion for ecological gardening, habitat restoration, and the rich horticultural traditions of the South.
