This week, Brookings has the honor of hosting The Wall That Heals, a traveling replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the only South Dakota stop on its 2026 national tour.

Open 24 hours a day and free to visit, this powerful exhibit offers a chance to honor, remember, and reflect.

The Wall That Heals is a three-quarter-scale replica of the memorial in Washington, D.C. It will be displayed from June 11-14 at the Fishback Soccer Complex, 1100 20th St. S. Free for all ages to experience, the exhibit will be open 24 hours a day starting Thursday, June 11, and ending at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 14.

The Wall will arrive in Brookings on Tuesday, June 9, with a motorcade es**rt and watch locations along the route. Assembly will begin at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 10. Disassembly will start at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, June 14.

Brookings was selected as one of only 31 communities nationwide to host The Wall That Heals during its 2026 national tour. It will be the exhibit’s only stop in South Dakota this year.

“As our nation celebrates its 250th birthday this year, Brookings is humbled to serve as a place of remembrance, reflection and honoring of our Vietnam veterans,” said Kristin Zimmerman, director of the city’s Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department.

What an incredible evening celebrating the unveiling of the Brookings Community Mural in celebration of America's 250th!

We were thrilled to see such a great turnout of community members gathering to find the tiles they painted and see how their individual contributions became part of something much bigger. Watching families, friends, and neighbors search for their pieces was a powerful reminder that every person plays a role in shaping the story of Brookings.

This mural is more than a piece of public art—it is a symbol of what happens when a community comes together around a shared vision. Hundreds of individual tiles now create a lasting work that reflects the creativity, pride, and connection that make Brookings special.

As Brookings Regional Growth Alliance brings together community development, hospitality, and business support under one organization, this mural serves as a fitting representation of the work ahead. Just as each tile contributes to the finished artwork, every resident, business, visitor, and partner contributes to the continued growth and success of our region.

Thank you to everyone who painted a tile, attended the unveiling, and helped bring this project to life. Together, we're creating something meaningful for generations to come.
