REACH PARADISE

We’ve seen this view from Tower House a thousand times and still stop to take it in. Yesterday, Eggemoggin Reach was glassy, seals and seabirds drawing trails across the surface, the islands in full color as late October light turned the water gold.

We couldn’t resist getting out on the water to catch the full moon rising over the Reach, seen here cresting above Tower House at High Head. Fall on the coast of Maine, at its peak.

One of our favorite spots to curl up with a book is this couch in the Tower House. A fire in the big hearth, a cup of coffee, and views of the Reach when you look up from the page. Nowhere to be but here.

We’re soaking up every last hour out here.

The calendar says October. The dock says one more swim.

There was a real chill in Brooklin today, the first one that felt like it meant it. Still, the water is as blue as it was in July, and the spruce trees haven’t changed a thing.

Nobody ever knows which swim is the last of the year. We’re not convinced we’ve had ours.

Summer on Eggemoggin Reach lets go slowly, and so do we.

High Head is full of cozy spots to curl up with a cup of coffee and a book, and this is one of our favorites: the library in Over Head.

Three arched windows look out into the trees, and there’s a perfect reading chair and a sofa deep enough to lose a morning in. The bookcases are stocked with well-loved reads, including a number of titles by Brooklin’s own E.B. White, who wrote Charlotte’s Web at his farm here in town.
