🚨 Attention Canyon Lake Community 🚨
Fish kills near the dam are linked to oxygen/temperature changes.

There have been recent reports of striped bass washing up on the shore or floating near the dam and ramp 1.
I reached out to the TX Parks and Wildlife District Biologist to confirm the details and in fact they came out to Canyon Lake to verify the event. It looks like another dissolved oxygen/temperature “squeeze” event, similar to what happened in the same spot last September. Essentially, dissolved oxygen levels fell too low while water temperatures were too high thus “squeezing” out available habitat for Striped Bass in this part of the reservoir. From their measurements on Friday, dissolved oxygen dropped below 4 mg/L around 20 ft and went close to 1 below 30 ft. Most freshwater fish, including Striped Bass, need dissolved oxygen to be at or above 5 mg/L. Water temperatures from the surface to at least 20’ are very warm (likely getting too warm for Striped Bass).
It seems to be a natural, localized event, but definitely worth keeping an eye on.
