DĂa de los Mu***os is a homecoming: the whole family, the living and the remembered, gathered in one place again.
On the second of November, families across Mexico set a place for the people they love: a photograph where it can be seen, marigolds whose scent is said to guide the spirits home, candles to light the way, and the dishes they liked best, because love here is fed. Above Tlalpan's plaza the papel picado glows against the night. In the museum courtyard stands an ofrenda built by the neighbourhood, for the neighbourhood. And La Catrina presides in her finery — she began life as a satire of the rich, and Mexico, sensibly, turned her into an invitation to everyone.
One of our own team was in Tlalpan for the holiday this year, and these photographs are hers. When we send travellers to Mexico for DĂa de los Mu***os, we build the trip with Journey Mexico, our Signature partners on the ground there. Some holidays you observe. This one, you are welcomed into.
