Cape Town + Winelands + safari: how I’d put the trip together 🇿🇦

If South Africa is on your wish list, this is one of my favourite ways to experience it for the first time.

I wouldn’t try to rush around and see everything. I’d concentrate on three very different parts of the trip…

🏙️ Start with 4 nights in Cape Town

Give yourself time for Table Mountain, the V&A Waterfront and the Cape Peninsula, with enough breathing room to enjoy the city rather than racing through it.

🍷 Then 2 or 3 nights in the Winelands

Franschhoek or Stellenbosch would be my choice. Beautiful scenery, fantastic restaurants and, of course, plenty of opportunities for wine tasting. It also gives you a lovely change of pace after Cape Town.

🦁 Finish with 3 or 4 nights on safari

This is the part I’d save until last. Early morning game drives, sundowners in the bush and the chance to see some incredible wildlife – it’s a pretty special way to finish a holiday.

And if you have more time?

I’d be very tempted to add a few nights on a beach afterwards too.

That’s what makes South Africa such a brilliant multi-centre destination. In one trip you can experience city, food and wine, spectacular scenery and safari – without feeling like you’re having the same holiday every day.

It’s been another wonderfully varied week of holiday planning!

Three places in Croatia I’d choose beyond Dubrovnik 🇭🇷

Dubrovnik might get most of the attention, but there’s so much more to Croatia.

If you’ve already visited Dubrovnik – or simply fancy seeing somewhere different – these three would be on my shortlist.

🌊 Split – My choice if you want plenty going on. You’ve got the historic old town and Diocletian’s Palace, a lovely waterfront and easy access to nearby islands, making it a brilliant base for combining sightseeing with some time by the sea.

⛵ Hvar – Gorgeous harbour views, beautiful coves and a more glamorous feel. I’d recommend it for couples or anyone who likes the idea of lazy beach days followed by drinks and dinner somewhere lovely in the evening.

🍷 Istria – Completely different again. Think hilltop towns, vineyards, olive groves, fantastic food and pretty coastal resorts. It’s a great choice if food and exploring are just as important to you as the beach.

That’s what I like about Croatia – you can create completely different holidays within the same country.

City break or countryside escape? 🏙️🌿

If you had a few days to get away, which would you choose?

🏙️ City break

Great restaurants, museums, sightseeing and plenty to explore from morning until night.

Think tapas in Seville, wandering through Rome or a long weekend discovering Lisbon.

🌿 Countryside escape

Beautiful scenery, smaller towns and villages, local food and a chance to explore at a much slower pace.

Think a Tuscan farmhouse, the vineyards of Provence or a few days surrounded by the mountains and lakes of Slovenia.

I’d find this one difficult because they’re two completely different types of break!

But if I only had three or four nights, I’d probably choose the city and pack plenty into my time away.

The flight upgrade I think is actually worth paying for ✈️

Not every flight upgrade is worth the extra money.

But there’s one I’d seriously consider on the right trip…

Premium Economy on a long-haul flight.

You don’t get the full Business Class experience, but you can get some of the things that make a long journey noticeably more comfortable.

💺 A wider seat and more legroom.

🍽️ An upgraded meal and service on many airlines.

🧳 Often a more generous baggage allowance.

✈️ A smaller, quieter cabin.

And on an overnight flight, that extra bit of space can make a real difference.

Would I pay for it on every journey? Probably not.

But for a long overnight sector, a special holiday or a trip where I wanted to arrive feeling a little more refreshed, it’s an upgrade I’d definitely price up.

Sometimes I’d even compare Premium Economy flights with a slightly less expensive hotel, because I’d rather be comfortable for 10 or 12 hours than pay for a room upgrade I might barely notice.

Hotel Spotlight: Domes of Elounda, Crete 🇬🇷

If you’re looking for a luxurious Greek escape but still want somewhere with plenty of character, Domes of Elounda is one I’d have on the shortlist.

It’s set on Crete’s beautiful northeast coast, overlooking the island of Spinalonga, so the views alone are pretty special.

Why do I like it?

🌊 The setting – you’re right by the sea with those gorgeous views across the bay.

🛏️ The accommodation – suites and villas give you plenty of choice, including options with private pools if you fancy something extra special.

🍴 The food – several restaurants mean you’re not tied to the same dining experience every evening.

🇬🇷 The location – you’re close enough to Elounda and Plaka to get out and experience a little more of Crete rather than spending the entire holiday inside the resort.

And that’s probably the biggest reason I’d recommend it.

You can have all the luxury and relaxation of a high-end resort, but there’s still plenty to discover beyond the hotel.

I’d particularly look at it for couples, families wanting something more luxurious, or a special celebration holiday.

Where I’d go in Europe in September ☀️

September is one of my favourite times to recommend a European holiday.

The peak summer crowds start to ease, but there are still some fantastic places to enjoy warm weather and plenty of sunshine.

If I was choosing, these three would be high on my list…

🇪🇸 Mallorca – Brilliant if you want an easy week in the sun with plenty of choice. Beautiful coves, mountain villages, great restaurants and everything from small boutique hotels to luxury resorts.

🇭🇷 Croatia – My pick if you like to combine relaxing with exploring. Think historic towns, gorgeous Adriatic coastline, island hopping and long evenings eating by the harbour.

🇮🇹 Sicily – The one I’d choose for food, culture and sightseeing alongside some beach time. There are ancient ruins, beautiful towns, volcanic landscapes and some seriously good Italian food.

Three destinations, but three quite different holidays.

☀️ Mallorca for an easy sunshine escape.
⛵ Croatia for coast and exploring.
🍋 Sicily for food and culture.

Well… that’s August wrapped up!

It’s been another fantastic month filled with holiday conversations, exciting bookings and helping people plan everything from relaxing beach escapes to once-in-a-lifetime adventures.

I’ve loved chatting to clients about next summer, winter sunshine, cruises and those special trips that have been on the wish list for years.
