Why location matters more than star rating

When people are comparing hotels, one of the first things they look at is the star rating.

And that’s understandable.

But if I had to choose between a better location and an extra star, I’d usually choose the location.

A beautiful hotel isn’t much use if you’re spending half your holiday in taxis.

Or if you’re miles from the beach, restaurants, or the places you actually want to visit.

The right location can make a holiday feel easy.

You can walk out of the hotel and straight into your day.

No planning.
No extra transport.
No wasting time getting from A to B.

I’ve often found that clients are happier in a well-located 4-star hotel than a 5-star hotel that’s further away from everything.

That’s why location is one of the first things I look at when helping people choose between options.

Because the hotel isn’t just where you sleep.

It’s the base for your whole holiday.

It sounds simple, but one of the best things you can do is make sure the holiday matches your expectations.

I’ve seen people book beautiful hotels that were too quiet for them.

I’ve seen others choose busy resorts when all they really wanted was somewhere peaceful to switch off.

Neither holiday was bad.

They just weren’t the right fit.

That’s why I always ask plenty of questions before making recommendations.

Not just where you want to go, but things like:

– Do you want to be out exploring or mostly relaxing?
– Do you like being in the heart of things or somewhere quieter?
– Is food important?
– Do you want lots going on or very little?

The more closely a holiday matches what you actually enjoy, the more likely it is to be one you come home happy with.

The destination matters.

But choosing the right holiday for you matters even more.

Cruise or land? How most people decide

This is one of the most common conversations I have with clients.

And usually, the answer isn’t about the destination.

It’s about how they want the holiday to feel.

People who choose a cruise often like the idea of unpacking once, having everything in one place, and waking up somewhere different every day without having to organise it themselves.

People who choose a land-based holiday often want to settle in, get to know an area properly, and spend more time in one place.

Neither is right or wrong.

It just depends what you’re looking for.

A cruise can be brilliant if you like variety and convenience.

A land holiday can be perfect if you want to slow down and make one destination your base.

The interesting thing is that a lot of people who tell me they’re “not cruise people” have never actually looked at what cruising is like now.

Sometimes it’s simply about finding the option that suits how you like to travel.

What I’ve been working on recently.

One of the things I enjoy most about this job is that no two weeks are ever the same.

Over the last few weeks I’ve been helping with a real mix of holidays, including:

– A family holiday for next summer
– Winter sun options for later this year
– Cruise itineraries with the right cabin and sailing dates
– A couple of trips where we’ve spent as much time discussing the options as the destination itself

That’s often the part people don’t see.

It’s this:

“Where exactly is it?”

I’ve seen lovely hotels that were miles from the beach.

Beautiful resorts that needed taxis for everything.

And city hotels that looked central on a map but weren’t really.

Location changes a holiday more than people think.

A slightly better location often makes more difference than a slightly better room.

It’s one of the first things I look at when I’m helping clients choose between options.

I know there’s always a temptation to wait and see.

Maybe something better will come along.

But the biggest advantage of booking early usually isn’t the price.

It’s the choice.

The flights you actually want.
The hotel you’ve got your eye on.
The family room that’s perfect for your dates.

The people who book earlier are choosing from everything that’s available.

The people who leave it later are often choosing from what’s left.

That’s why so many of my clients are already looking at next year’s holidays.

Not because they have to.

Another month of holiday planning done ✈️

This month has been a real mix of trips… cruises, family holidays, winter sun, multi-centres, and a lot of looking at how to make trips feel easier and better put together overall.

One thing I always notice is how differently everyone travels.
Some people want complete relaxation, some want to see as much as possible, and most want a bit of both.

That’s why I enjoy helping people narrow things down properly rather than just booking the first option that appears online.

The one thing that improves every trip

Time.

Not necessarily a longer holiday…
just enough time built into it properly.

So many trips try to squeeze too much in.
Too many plans, too many early starts, too much moving around.

The holidays people enjoy most usually have a bit more breathing space.

Time to:
– Relax properly
– Explore without rushing
– Enjoy where you are instead of constantly moving on

Even simple things make a difference.
An extra night before a cruise.
A slower route through a multi-centre.
A later flight home instead of leaving at dawn.

It changes the whole feel of a trip.

That’s usually what makes holidays feel easy rather than exhausting.

Not doing more…
just giving yourself enough time to enjoy it properly.
