Here’s how I turned 25K points → $607 flight to Mexico

While Amex wanted 61K points for this exact same United flight…

I’ve been saying this for years. The Admirals Club is the most underrated lounge in your wallet.

Yes, the Centurion Lounge has better food, ch*****ne, and a full complimentary cocktail bar. But there’s almost always a waitlist. And on a tight connection or an early morning flight, that’s a problem.

The Admirals Club doesn’t have the same wow factor. But it has something the Centurion Lounge can’t match. Reliable access. No waitlist. No three hour cutoff before your flight. You walk in, you sit down, you work.

My strategy as a frequent flyer is to carry access to both. The Centurion for the long layovers where I want the food and the lie down chairs. The Admirals Club for everything else.

It’s not double dipping. It’s an access portfolio.

This isn’t a credit card lounge but it’s possible to access the most exclusive lounge in the U.S. without paying full price for an international first class ticket. Here’s how. If you’re flying in true international first class on British Airways, American Airlines, or one of their partners such as Japan Airlines, you can get access with your ticket. But that’s not the only way. You can also access it with a first class ticket (for now) on premium transcon flights on American Airlines. This includes LAX - JFK, and SFO - JFK, which is how we were able to get in on our otherwise business class flight to Italy. How? We upgraded for $300 from business to first class, but typically we book economy for either $300 or 12.5K AA miles, and then upgrade from economy (skipping business class) to first class for around $500.
