The Colors of Alaska
Red – Berries are bountiful in Alaska thanks to long summer days and cooler average temperatures. Salmonberries pop up along streams, on shorelines, and across moist forest floors and have a slight sweetness that is tasty off the bush or boiled into jam. Lingonberries grow in the tundra or in rocky, peaty forest soil and ripen later in the season. Their crisp tart flavor becomes more mellow when cooked and sweetened, so they are often enjoyed in syrup or jam.
