On Sunday, I visited Mexico City’s incredible National Museum of Anthropology. The building completed in 1964 by architect Pedro Ramírez Vázquez is stunning and looks like it is from the 21st century. The exhibitions both in the galleries and landscaped courtyards mostly emphasize Mexico’s pre-colonial history, including the pictured Aztec Sunstone from the 16th century. This museum is definitely worth a visit!

Something I did not expect to see in Mexico City: a copy of Chicago’s Standing Lincoln statue! The one in Lincoln Park was designed by Augustus St. Gaudens in 1887. A replica of it was gifted to Mexico City in 1966 by the President Lyndon Johnson. According to Historical Mexico: “As a senator Lincoln was against the United States invading Mexico in 1846 and while he was president he spoke out against European imperialism as well.”

For the last few years, I’ve taken a break from Chicago’s winters to visit Puerto Vallarta. This weekend I’m trying somewhere new for me in the same country: Mexico City!

Upon arriving at Chicago’s airport this morning, I serendipitously spotted our Sister Cities banner with Mexico City celebrating its cultural exchange relationship since 1991! 🇲🇽

I am not doing any live-streamed virtual tours while in Mexico City, but I will post some pictures and videos of the wonderful things I check out. Do you have any recommendations to share?

I attended a wonderful event yesterday for “Don’t Go”, a new book sharing stories from people told to avoid Chicago’s Black neighborhoods and how we can disrupt this discrimination. The stellar panel discussion included the authors, Tonika Lewis Johnson and Maria Krysan, along with Shermann “Dilla” Thomas and Brandon Pope. The event was really powerful, interactive, and inspiring, and it highlights how diversity makes us all stronger. I’m looking forward to reading the book this week!

P.S. The food, drink, music, and customer service at Bronzeville Winery were all spectacular!

Which Illinois state flag finalist is your favorite?

Illinois will either be keeping its current flag ( #13), reinstating its flag from either 1918 ( #6) or 1968 ( #11), or selecting one of the new finalists from the public!

I’ve generally put them in order of preference. I like the first one the most, because it references both our agricultural and industrial history, it incorporates the state flower (the violet), there’s symbolism with the important waterways, and it references Illinois becoming the 21st state.

You can vote daily for your favorite, and polls close February 14. Click the link in the comments to vote. The Illinois General Assembly is expected to make a decision in the spring!

Before 2024 comes to a close, you can still vote for the Best of Chicago awards. I’m up for Best Tour, and it only takes a minute. Thanks for your support!

Happy New Year, everybody! 🥳

The ballot will be open for voting December 2 through December 31.

I hope everyone had a lovely Christmas! I enjoyed spending time with my family in Minnesota. 🎄

When I gave last weekend’s Incredible Interiors - Christmas Edition walking tour, the Chicago Cultural Center hosted an open house with an array of wonderful performances, including this one above from MSB Dance. Such a fun treat!

You have one last chance to see holiday decor with me on Saturday at 1:00 pm in-person on my Incredible Interiors - Christmas Edition tour. Click the link in the comments to learn more and reserve your spot. I hope to see you then!

Merry Christmas, everyone! I hope you all have a wonderful day.

I love this shot of the Christmas tree looking up at the Sears (Willis) Tower! This picture was taken right after I concluded my 12 Virtual Tours of Christmas series with Skydeck’s Selfies with Santa. We got to see Skydeck Chicago’s amazing galleries, check out the views from the 103rd floor, walk out on to the harrowing Ledge, and even find Santa bopping around! 🎅

The recording for this tour and the six other installments from my 12 Virtual Tours of Christmas series from this week will be available to watch until Monday on the Tours With Mike page and YouTube channel. It was a lot of work pulling this ambitious series together, and I would really appreciate nice reviews, a vote for Best Tour, and/or tips via this link: https://tourswithmike.com/tip-mike. Thank you so much for your support!

I look forward to seeing you on more special tours soon! 🎄

Today I experienced one of Chicago’s most acclaimed Christmas traditions: the Joffrey Ballet’s The Nutcracker! They did an amazing job of taking Tchaikovsky‘s classic and placing it during the World’s Fair of 1893. It was extraordinary! It had so many things I love featuring on my tours: that epic Fair, immigrant history, ~Daniel Burnham, a drag queen, and rats! The sets were STUNNING, and my face hurts from smiling the entire time. It made me happy thinking that the children in the audience could be encouraged to learn more about the World’s Colombian Exposition! 🥰

If you ever have the chance to see this epic show, do it!
