Natchez, Mississippi, is famous for its historic mansions, but it offers much more than architecture and gardens. As the oldest continuous settlement on the Mississippi River, its rich, layered past is waiting to be unwrapped. Planning a Deep South USA road trip? Natchez is a must.

I loved discovering how the city developed in two distinct parts. On-Top-of-the-Hill was once the “proper” town, where wealthy planters built stately homes with sweeping river views. Today, it’s a postcard-pretty downtown filled with independent boutiques, bookstores, cafés, and restaurants.

Down below, Under-the-Hill was the rowdy, “improper” side of town; a legendary, lawless port. Today, it’s a relaxed riverside hangout with great bars, restaurants, and the best sunset views in the city.

Exploring both areas reveals Natchez’s dichotomies of upper and lower, proper and improper, and the tension between romance and reality, all of which make it a compelling destination.

It's also encouraging to observe the city's efforts to recognise its full history via thoughtful, engaging experiences that invite us to sit with both the Southern comfort and the deep discomfort of its past. This openness, diversity, and inclusiveness add to its beauty and give you more reasons to stay a little longer and plan a return visit.
