There’s nothing quite like fall in Montana. 🍂💛

One of our favorite sights this time of year? The western larch (also known as tamarack) turning brilliant shades of gold and painting the mountainsides in yellow.

We took a drive up to Hungry Horse Reservoir, and WOW… Montana did not disappoint! Those golden trees scattered across the mountains are something you really have to see to appreciate.

And here’s a little secret: the western larch is actually a deciduous conifer. It’s one of the few evergreens that loses its needles every fall!

If Montana in the fall is on your bucket list, there’s still time to make it happen.

Come experience the golden season, explore the beauty surrounding Glacier National Park, and make Fort Williamson your home base.

🍂 Fall is here. The mountains are golden. And we’d love to have you stay!

Most things are winding down in Glacier by mid-October, from temperatures to visitation. But larch trees are just getting started!

Native to the Northwest, the western larch (Larix occidentalis) is a deciduous conifer, which means it has needles that grow each spring, then turn golden and fall off every autumn.

Larches are highly fire-adapted as well. Their thick bark helps them survive a fire, and their tiny wind-blown seeds scatter across a burn and become tiny larch seedlings. The North Fork has a rich fire history that is highlighted every fall by golden hillsides of larches.

Keep an eye out if you're in the park this fall!🍂
