As parents of 2 neurodivergent boys we like to celebrate our wins and share/learn from our losses. Sometimes we feel like more times than none we lose. This weekend at the Notre Dame vs. Rice game was a big win- not just for the team but for Will & Jackson! We have learned from our travels over the past years a few things that hopefully will help others:

1) Have a plan, share the plan with your child and stick to it. Sometimes you may have to pivot, just make it clear what is going to happen and when.

2)Just like when your child was a toddler, pack a bag! We had a fidget bag, noise cancelling headphones, a cooling towel, IPad (as a last resort) and more!

3)Listen to your child- Will needed shade and we found shade then he played in the rocks and was content.

4)If a venue has a sensory/quiet space and your child needs to recharge- DO IT! This was the best part of the day as we have not been able to bring Will to a game in 2 years. Jackson even needed some downtime too!

5)After that recharge- Will was ready to head to our seats! It was a huge step for him. He was obsessed with the scoreboard, so we now know we must sit where we can see it better.

6)When your child is done they are done! Will could not see the field due to a lady sitting on the largest seat back chair and he was ready to go! We picked up a hot dog on the way out of the stadium and headed to the bookstore then spent time at the basketball court.

Did we watch the game and cheer for the Irish- sure didn’t but our win was bigger than any football game could have been! We will be back to Notre Dame Football to cheer on the Irish. Just may take a few more trips to the sensory room to get us there.
