SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY ALERT!

BlueGreen Expeditions family - we wanted to share an amazing and unique opportunity with you! There is a FULLY FUNDED scholarship to a young woman, age 26 or younger, from Washington or Oregon state, to join an upcoming expedition with Blue Green Expeditions to the Silver Bank Humpback Whale Sanctuary in the Dominican Republic. This is a snorkeling expedition to assist with passive acoustic monitoring and citizen science data collection. Travel costs, including round trip airfare, hotels, airport transfers, etc. will be fully covered in addition to the expedition berth on the boat. (!!!!!)

The ideal candidate would be current PNW community college students and/or students who have completed their community college AA education within the last three years. Previous expedition or ocean experience is not required. An interest and desire to gain experience in ocean science, environmental science, conservation, scuba diving, citizen science, or the connection between people and our oceans is a plus.

Everyone knows that polar conservation is a major part of what we do. We are often asked how people can get involved! It is a very appropriate question right now given the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) is meeting in Hobart, Tasmania (27 countries and the EU) to discuss two particularly important issues:

1. The creation of Marine Protected Area (MPA) for the Antarctica Peninsula.

2. Stricter Krill Fishery Controls near the Peninsula and the Southern Ocean as a whole.

The creation of MPAs was mandated previously but with no details or timelines. The focus is on the Peninsula as it is the most stressed area of Antarctica given its rapidly warming temperatures and increased fishing pressure. Protecting it from fishing would be a great start to increasing protection for the rest of the continent and Southern Ocean. Traditionally, Russia and China are the most vocal about EXPANDING krill fishing and not implementing the MPA's.

If you are from the US, please contact the Office of Ocean and Polar Affairs- Dr. Elizabeth Kim is leading the delegation. Other govermental offices that are involved include NOAA, State Department and NSF. They need to know this is an important issue and that we should all care what happens at the end of the world! Most countries with a polar program are represented at the meeting so please contact your representatives and make your feelings known. The krill, the whales, the entire food web is at stake.

The poles are the "lungs" of our oceans and our planet, and yet they are the least understood regions on Earth.
