This photo captures a perfect example of the rain shadow effect over Whidbey Island. Storm clouds drop most of their rain over the Olympic Mountains, leaving Whidbey surprisingly sunny and calm while rain falls just across the water.

It’s one of the reasons travelers love visiting here, you can watch dramatic weather roll by while enjoying milder skies.
