Let’s talk about the Real I.D. You’ve likely seen the signs around the airports or heard rumblings about how you need to get one soon. You should always stick to government websites when inquiring about what documents you need when traveling abroad, but I always recommend having a passport handy, just in case!

Client Trip… school edition!✈️📚✏️
I still remember the first time I left the country. It wasn’t for vacation — it was for a study abroad program rooted in service learning. That trip changed everything. It challenged my worldview, introduced me to cultures I’d never experienced, and showed me how travel can be deeply transformative. It even led me to write my college thesis on how educational travel can impact students’ lives. Years later, it led me to create Smiley Travel.

So, getting to build this custom trip to Costa Rica for a school community felt like such a full circle moment.

This group of students and parents didn’t just see Costa Rica — they experienced it. They soaked in volcanic landscapes at Poás, explored biodiversity in the Palo Verde wetlands, visited the iconic La Paz Waterfall Gardens, and learned the art of coffee production at Doka Estate. They ended their journey with sunset catamarans and beach time in Tamarindo — because fun matters, too!

But what made this trip unforgettable? A meaningful school visit and service project in San José, where the group helped repaint a mural in the gym of Hatillo 2 School. It was hands-on, heartfelt, and a beautiful way to give back to a local community.

Trips like this are exactly why I do what I do. Travel can change lives. And when you mix curiosity, compassion, and a little adventure — it absolutely does.

I’m Rebecca Smiley — travel advisor, professional yapper, and fresh pasta enthusiast. I grew up in Kentucky and still live there (yes, I wear shoes… I can literally see Cincinnati from my house). 🥃🐎🏙️

I’ve always loved an adventure, but my love for travel really took off in college when I left the country for the first time. Now, I help others explore the world, whether that’s a dreamy honeymoon, a bucket-list cruise, or the perfect all-inclusive getaway.

Mine was probably my family’s land & sea Disney combo. We did some days at the parks and a cruise. It was our first ever cruise and it was rerouted by hurricane Floyd. We hardly ever got off the ship! I don’t remember much since I was only like 3…. But there’s some bits and pieces I remember.

Last week, we hosted our first unofficial event for KHM’s Young Professional group — a night of bowling during our annual Crystal Conference! 🎳

Stepping into the travel industry as a young professional can be intimidating. When I first started, I was often much younger than most people in the room. I was lucky to build incredible relationships with experienced advisors who welcomed me, mentored me, and helped me grow. But for a long time, I didn’t realize how many other young agents were out there too.

That’s why I’m so excited to help create something that helps young travel professionals find each other — while still embracing the entire industry. This initiative isn’t about separating ourselves but about making sure young advisors know they belong here. It’s about fostering connections with peers who understand your challenges, celebrating wins with those walking the same path, and taking that confidence into the broader travel community.

I couldn’t have done this alone, and I’m so excited to be building this within KHM! Huge thank you to Rick for believing in this vision, Bill & Meredith for helping bring it to life, and Carolyn, Amy & Dewayne for always encouraging me. And of course, Jacki Marks & ALG’s Kindness Event for the spark of inspiration that started it all. 🤍

Throwing it back to the first trip I ever planned. The Rechtin family did a cross-country road trip and hit Colorado Springs, Utah, Rocky Mountain National Park, Arches (and the list goes on and on… 😂). They took some amazing photos and I have to say, for my first trip ever, I think it turned out pretty great.

This week I have been spending time at my host agency’s Crystal Conference and Award Show. What a fun week, and I even got to bring my mom as my guest!

I’m very excited to share that I have won the “Golden Retriever” KHMMY award. Seriously, it’s a real award😂🐶 I know the award is playful and silly, but I take a lot of pride in being inclusive and bringing good energy to the travel industry. I am so happy that my peers and mentors recognize that in me as well. Thank you for this award!
