Beautiful Cusco
Once the capital city of the Incan Empire it is now home to a rich and beautiful culture. It is a mix of the native and Spanish descendants with all the interesting intersections of the two.

On our Dr. McClure’s Musical Tours adventure, we took a day trip to Meinigen which was lovely. Even though it was Sunday, we enjoyed the cute little town, had excellent gelato (where I could speak more of their native Italian tongue than I can make out any German) and toured Elisabethenburg Castle. Their collection of musical instruments was really neat and interactive.

On Monday we visited Wartburg Castle. This magnificent site was built in 1067 and enjoyed a peaceful existence for almost its entire history.
Martin Luther lived here for the 10 months it took him to translate the Bible from Latin into German. And for my Catholic friends, also the place where St. Elisabeth spent most of her life and got married.
A must see if you’re anywhere near Eisenach, Germany.

Day trip to the Sacred Valley of the Incas.
Ollantaytambo was an Incan agricultural site where they grew crops on terraced land up the mountain side and stored their grain.
We marveled at the Andes Mountains and met alpacas, llamas and vicuñas. And we visited Chinchero, where Incan descendants still live and make their crafts by hand.

Yesterday we checked off one of my top items from my bucket list: Machu Picchu

High in the Andean Mountains, Machu Picchu was built as a way point for Incan trade from the nearby rainforests. Construction started in 1450 and it was only inhabited for about a century. After the conquest of the Spaniards, Machu Picchu was “lost” until it was discovered in 1911. (Locals knew of its existence.)

The mist rolled in and fog blanketed the area as we explored, but that just added to the ambiance of being in a cloud forest. It was incredible. Our guide was fantastic.
