If your cruise leaves from Los Angeles, the island you can see from the harbor on a clear day deserves more than a few hours.

Give Catalina a night or two before you board, or after you get off. Avalon has the harbor, the round 1929 Casino, and the Wrigley Memorial & Botanic Garden up the hill. Two Harbors, out on the quieter end of the island, is hiking trails, a dive shop, and a place to eat, which is exactly the point.

Glass-bottom boat, kayak, snorkel, or just sit still for a while. Keep an eye out for the bison. 🦬

Trick or trip? 🎃

I'll take the trip. Give me a castle with a few centuries of ghost stories over a bowl of fun-size candy. (The candy still comes along, by the way. It goes in my carry-on for the crew on every sailing.)

The spooky part is fun, but what makes places like these stay with you is the history underneath. Old castles and crooked cobblestone streets are best seen slowly, with a local guide who knows which stories are true, and in a season when the tour buses have gone home.

Trading cold days for Caribbean sunshine is the easy part. Picking the right ship from the right port takes a little more thought. ☀️

This winter Virgin Voyages has Scarlet Lady and Resilient Lady out of Miami, with stops like Key West and the Beach Club at Bimini. Valiant Lady now sails from San Juan and heads south to Curaçao, Bonaire, Barbados, and Dominica, islands the Miami ships aren't calling on this season.

No kids on board, 18 and over only. The specialty restaurants come with your fare. Gratuities are a separate line item now, so plan for them.

Puerto Rico might be the easiest "day before the cruise" I know. 🌴

U.S. citizens don't need a passport, you're spending U.S. dollars, and Old San Juan sits right next to the cruise piers.

Fly in a day early and you get the colorful streets, the music after dark, and a good night's sleep, instead of a sprint from the airport to the gangway. That extra night is also your cushion if a flight runs late.

Flying all the way to New Zealand just to see it from the deck of a ship? That's half the trip.

Geothermal springs, waterfalls, long empty stretches of coastline. This is a country that asks you to slow down, and a few unhurried days on land before or after your cruise is how you answer it. 🌿

I'll put the land days and the sailing together as one trip, so the transfers are handled and you're not checking ferry schedules on vacation.

Some trips you remember for the view. The ones people tell me about years later, they remember for how they were looked after.

That's why I pay attention to staffing. On Oceania's smaller ships, Insignia, Nautica and Sirena, it's about 400 staff for roughly 340 suites and staterooms. You feel that by the second morning. ✨

Not every Oceania ship is that size, and it matters which one you pick for which itinerary. Aurelia, coming in November 2027, will be smaller still at 238 suites and staterooms.
