Just a little solar wind/aurora visibility update for tonight… we could get something if we have a sustained -Bz for the next hour or so…, but I wouldn’t hold my breath. It would likely only be visible on camera anyways, and briefly.

Sleep easy tonight, everyone, and stay safe! I hope you all have a nice Memorial Day weekend! I’ll be spending it studying for my comps and doing lit review 😭😂

Finally, we have some more sunspots on the Earth-facing disk. The sunspot number is up to 99, but even with this recent activity, we will likely still record one of the lowest monthly sunspot numbers in quite some time.

Region AR 4087 is turning out of view, so it's right on time to start flaring (joking), but of more interest is AR 4097 which has a beta-gamma magnetic configuration with a 10% chance of M-flares over the next 24 hours. It will be turning into better view soon, and maybe it will grow larger and more complex over the coming days.

All the rest of the sunspot regions have simple magnetic complexity.

Have a nice weekend!

FYI—if you’re seeing this article everywhere and wondering about it—it’s NOT TRUE! Daily Mail has absolutely butchered their space weather reporting over the past week.

First of all, radio blackouts are not terrifying. They happen and are mostly unnoticed by the general population. Only the most severe R3 or R4 blackouts (X1+ to X10+ solar flares) are really notable. It’s possible to get radio bursts which are longer lived with lower-intensity solar flares, but this a nuance I’m sure Daily Mail has no knowledge of, so it’s a moot point.

Second of all, NASA didn’t say anything about this. NASA does not warn people of radio blackouts, NOAA SWPC does, and they never use words like “terrifying.” NASA monitors and releases forecasts of CMEs for missions around Earth and throughout the solar system. NOAA SWPC is the official space weather forecasting office of the United States.

Third of all, and the most egregious point… there is literally a 5% chance of an X-flare occurring right now. Back when we had AR 4087 popping off a couple X-flares, we jumped to 30%, but 4087 is a shell of its former self and not a threat for further flare activity. This makes Daily Mail’s article MISINFORMATION! This isn’t even bad reporting, it’s blatant lying for the sake of clicks and stirring the pot.

This stuff makes my blood boil, because I am passionate to make people care about space weather but for the right reasons. Yes, we need to pay attention to the Sun, but a constant barrage of fearmongering headlines is going to create a sense of distrust and a “boy who cried wolf” scenario when a Carrington-class event inevitably does happen.
