It has been absolutely beautiful here as our birch forest is adorned with fall colors! Though the fall colors and weather are short lived here, it’s gorgeous while it lasts! Fairbanks turns gold for a few weeks! The reindeer pictured below is one of our yearlings, Yuri, whose amazing antlers truly match the beauty of his surroundings. It’s hard to believe he’s only a year old with antlers like those!

It’s the moment you’ve all been waiting for… Poppy shed her velvet! Our gorgeous boss reindeer grows record breaking antlers year after year. She is still our record holder this year with 42 tines! This set of antlers actually ties with last years set. Incredibly impressive and beautiful as ever!

It may be cooling down in Fairbanks, but things are heating up in this herd! The majority of our reindeer have shed, or started to shed their velvet! This means that hormones are going crazy right now! Our herd goes from peaceful and loving in the summer, to a little more spicy in the winter months, and that transition happens as they’re shedding that velvet!

Our calves are getting their last bits of nursing in for the season! Our mamas have begun setting boundaries with their calf, and will continue to wean them until they are no longer nursing by winter. Pictured here is Poppy and Jasmine!

Frankie has a unique feature that sets him apart from the rest of this herd, his white toes! Frankie has two white toes on his front left hoof. This is a feature that was passed down from his grandmother, Buttercup, who had white toes on all four hooves! We were so thrilled to see this trait pop back up in our herd. Frankie loves playing in the mud, so this feature is often less noticeable this time of year, but today he was nice and clean and we were able to show it off with these photos!

Heather shed her velvet today! She and Frankie are the only two who have shed so far, but the rest of the herd is not far behind! Please note that this process is not painful for them at all, the blood you see is just remaining blood from the antlers formation, and it helps the velvet shed from the antler easier!

Fall is quickly approaching, and that means it’s milking time at the ranch! We milk our mamas each fall and save it in case we have a calf who is struggling to latch come spring. Reindeer milk has the highest milk fat content of any land mammal at 18%-22%!!! With that being said, there is no reindeer milk replacer or formula commercially available, so it is vital that we stock up when we can! We also use their milk for our reindeer milk skincare line. With the high milk fat content, it makes an incredibly moisturizing product. Reindeer milk is liquid gold!
