"Full Spectrum"

This photo is the February page of my upcoming 2027 Awesome Auroras calendar, launching October 9 at 9 AM Alaska time.

Where do the aurora's colors come from? Think of the sky as a giant neon lamp: particles from space crash into gases high in our atmosphere and make them glow, and the color depends on which gas gets hit and how high up it is. Oxygen glows green around 60 miles up and a deeper red much higher than that, while nitrogen adds blue and pink from lower down. When red and blue overlap, our eyes blend them into purple. This photo was captured during a strong, G3 geomagnetic storm (Kp 7). Stronger activity sends more particles into the atmosphere, producing more vivid colors, especially the high-altitude reds.
