Meet someone who has spent his career chasing the full story, not just the easy parts.

Tom Wing is a historian, Assistant Professor at University of Arkansas - Fort Smith, and Director of the Drennen-Scott Historic Site in Van Buren. Twenty-three years at the university, ten in the secondary classroom, and eight as a National Park Service ranger and historian. He didn't land here by accident. He built toward it.

The site he stewards is a 36-acre property anchored by a house built in 1838, passed down through five generations of the same family before UAFS acquired it. It's the kind of place that could've been sanitized into a postcard. Tom makes sure it isn't. The full story is told here. The founder, the enslaved people who worked his land, the Native nations displaced, and the women erased from the record.

Off the clock, you'll find him exactly where you'd expect. Still somewhere in the past, still asking questions๐Ÿ“œ

You know that feeling when you stumble onto a restaurant that becomes an instant favorite? That's Diamond Head #2 ๐Ÿœ

Tan Dai and his family left Vietnam with nothing, stripped of everything they owned, and made the journey to Fort Smith. What followed is a story of resilience, family, and food. For over 40 years, generations of the Dai family have shown up almost every single day, welcoming every customer with a smile and cooking dishes Tan has made entirely his own.

You know that one stop on a road trip that you didn't plan for but ended up loving the most? ๐Ÿš—

This , we're hoping Fort Smith becomes that stop for you. Walk downtown Fort Smith and take in the murals. Step inside the courtroom where "Hanging Judge" Parker handed down frontier justice. Grab a meal you can't get back home, pick up a souvenir with a story, and if you're not ready to leave, stay the night in a renovated 1890's loft right downtown.

๐Ÿ“ Save this for your next Arkansas adventure.
