Some people spend Halloween at a haunted house. I spent mine at Dracula’s Castle in Transylvania!

A few Halloweens ago, I had the opportunity to visit the famous Bran Castle in Romania before boarding a river cruise from Bucharest to Budapest.

The castle dates back to the late 1300s and is famously associated with the Dracula legend. It’s often linked to Vlad the Impaler, the 15th-century prince who helped inspire the Dracula stories. But here’s the interesting part: historians aren’t certain Vlad ever actually stayed at Bran Castle! The connection between the castle and the fictional Count Dracula is a little more legend than fact.

There were plenty of visitors that day, and the atmosphere was definitely festive. But one of my favorite parts wasn’t even inside the castle. It was looking out from the top and taking in the gorgeous fall colors across the surrounding countryside. Absolutely beautiful!

The wrong cruise cabin location can mean noisy nights, extra motion, or a view of a lifeboat.

📍 Front, middle, or back?

If you’re prone to motion sickness, a cabin near the middle of the ship, particularly on a lower deck, generally experiences less movement.

🔊 What’s above and below you?

Love sleeping in? You might want to avoid a cabin directly beneath the pool deck, where early-morning chair rearranging can become your unwanted wake-up call. Nightclubs, theaters, and busy public areas can also mean extra noise.

👀 What’s your view?

A balcony doesn’t always mean an unobstructed view! Some cabins have lifeboats or other ship structures blocking part of the scenery.

🚶 How far do you want to walk?

Being close to the elevators can be convenient, especially if you have mobility concerns. But being right next to them may mean more foot traffic and noise. And remember, some ships are HUGE. A cabin at one end of the ship can mean quite a hike to dinner at the other end!

💰 And then there’s the price.

Sometimes moving up a deck or choosing a better location costs very little. Other times, the upgrade isn’t worth the difference. It all depends on what’s important to you.

My advice? Don’t pick a cabin based on the price and the category alone. Think about how you sleep, how much walking you want to do, whether motion bothers you, and how you’ll use your space.

Picking a cruise cabin? Don’t make the mistake of looking at the price and stopping there.

Interior, ocean view, balcony, or suite? Let’s talk about what you’re actually getting with each one!

🏠 Interior: Usually the most budget-friendly option, but you’re sacrificing more than a view. These cabins tend to be smaller, with less room to spread out and often no sofa or separate seating area. Plus, without natural light, it’s surprisingly easy to lose track of whether it’s 8 a.m. or 2 p.m.! Great for budget-conscious travelers who plan to spend most of their time out exploring.

🌊 Ocean View: You get natural light and a view of the ocean without paying for a balcony. Some cabins even have a window ledge or seating area where you can watch the waves. This can be a fun option for kids or your 78-year-old dad who enjoys watching the world go by!

🌅 Balcony: Yes, it costs more. But for some of us, it’s worth every penny. Some people say they’ll never spend time in their cabin. Me? I get peopleed out. Give me a quiet balcony, a good book, and a little time to myself. That’s vacation, too! A balcony can also be great for enjoying morning coffee or watching the scenery sail by.

✨ Suite: More space, more room to spread out, and often additional perks or services. Depending on the cruise line, suites can come with priority boarding, exclusive lounges, specialty dining benefits, or access to private areas of the ship.

💡 Here’s the thing: The best cabin isn’t necessarily the most expensive one. It’s the one that fits your family, your budget, and the way you like to vacation.

And don’t forget: the type of cabin you choose is only HALF the decision. Where that cabin is located on the ship matters, too!

So, you don’t want to vacation with 4,000+ strangers? I get it. 😂 But before you write off cruising, let’s talk about the OTHER side of the cruise world.

🚢 Windstar Cruises has yacht-style ships carrying as few as 148 guests, with a laid-back atmosphere, smaller ports, and a pretty cool feature: a watersports platform that opens at the back of the ship so you can kayak, paddleboard, snorkel, or jump in and enjoy the ocean when conditions allow.

🥂 Silversea takes small-ship cruising in a more luxurious direction. Think spacious suites, personal butler service, exceptional dining, and ships carrying anywhere from 100 to around 730 guests.

And those are just two options!

Maybe you don’t need waterslides, go-kart tracks, Broadway-style shows, and 20 restaurants. Maybe you’d rather visit smaller islands, skip some of the crowds, enjoy a little extra personal attention, and experience a more intimate side of cruising.
