One of the most unusual circus performers of the 1800s came from right here in Sumner County. Born in 1870, Ella Harper had a rare condition that caused her knees to bend backward, making it more comfortable for her to walk on all fours. As a teenager, Ella entered the sideshow world and became nationally famous as the “Camel Girl.” By 1886 she was a featured attraction with W. H. Harris’s Nickel Plate Circus, where advertisements reportedly claimed she earned an astonishing $200 a week and she was sometimes exhibited alongside an actual camel. But Ella didn't spend her entire life under the big top. She eventually left show business, married, and lived a much quieter life before her death in 1921.
