Trillium Mountain Cabin Welcome to Trillium Mountain, our little piece of the Smokies in Chalet Village.

Enjoy beautiful mountain views, plenty of room to unwind, and a great location just minutes from downtown Gatlinburg and Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

I posted this same question on my personal page, and since we have some past guests following us here, I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask those that are very familiar with Trillium Mountain.

We met with our co-hosts from Smoky Mountain Vacation Cabins, this past week for a yearly account review and discussed potential improvements.

As you know, the lower-level rec room at our cabin currently has a queen sleeper sofa, walk-out covered porch, and a full bathroom with a large tiled shower that was added in January.

It’s a multi-purpose space, but at bedtime it essentially becomes a large private master suite, except for the sleeper sofa. We’re now thinking about replacing or supplementing the queen sleeper sofa with a queen Murphy bed with a quality mattress. We wouldn’t be adding any sleeping capacity, just replacing the existing sleeping option with something we think would be more comfortable. The sleeper sofa works, especially for kids, but I think a Murphy bed with a good mattress would be more appealing and comfortable for adult couples. And when it’s folded up, we’d still have the full rec room space.

My thought process is that If someone were looking for a cabin for four couples, a queen Murphy bed with a quality mattress would be more appealing than a queen sleeper sofa,

I’d like to hear any pros or cons in the comments that we might not be thinking about.

Poll:

Since our guests love seeing bears, and many times they are unaware of the visits while inside, we’re rolling out beta testing on a “Wildlife Alert” system. The guest scans a QR code, a form pops up, and they provide a name, email address, cell phone number and number of days of their reservation, and when an animal is spotted in an identified zone of the property with our cameras, they will receive this text message:
Trillium Mountain Cabin Wildlife Alert: Wildlife, possibly black bear(s) detected on the property. Please remain aware and keep your distance. For safety tips, visit BearWise.org. Reply STOP to opt out. Msg & data rates may apply.
The photos are of successful alerts and the resulting text messages.
We’re hoping this adds to our guests experience.

A Little Cabin Geekery (That Guests Will Never See, But Makes a Big Difference)

I’m always looking for ways to make Trillium Mountain Cabin run smarter behind the scenes. Our newest upgrade adds live propane tank monitoring directly into the generator dashboard—something our guests will never notice, but that helps us keep the cabin reliable and ready no matter the weather.

This gives us real‑time fuel levels, better awareness during storms or cold snaps, and confidence that the backup systems are always prepared—even when we’re 500 miles away. It also ties into our automated generator exercise routines, so the system can run its scheduled health checks without us having to be on‑site.

What I love most is that it’s powered by a tiny Raspberry Pi running the free, open‑source GenMon project. Generac offers a paid monitoring service, but this open‑source setup is actually more feature‑rich and gives us deeper insight without subscription fees. It’s a great example of how thoughtful tech can quietly improve the guest experience without ever getting in the way.

Here's the dashboard snapshot. It’s pretty cool seeing everything tied together behind the scenes.

Quadruplets! They had just finished up checking out housekeeping's pickup truck bed

We have fiberglass marking rod reflectors along our driveway for safety. Occasionally they end up being removed by guests, or so we thought. I had no idea bear cubs were so mischievous. Enjoy the twanging!!

I hope these bear and cub videos aren’t getting old. They stopped by again this weekend, and it was just too sweet not to share.
