The dog crate is a piece of furniture. That was deliberate.

It sits in the entry with a padded bed inside, drawers on top, and a treat jar we keep filled. Guests who crate their dogs don't have to haul a wire kennel up the stairs, and guests who don't can leave the doors open and use it as a console table. There are two plush crabs in there. They came with the house.

We also keep a feeding station with bowls, because the bowls are what everybody forgets.

Pets stay free here. No fee, no per-night surcharge, no breed restrictions, no cleaning upcharge for the dog — worth saying plainly, since that fee usually lives in the checkout total rather than the listing price.

One thing about this side of the county: Currituck Sound is freshwater, not Atlantic. A dog that swims off our dock comes back wet, not salt-caked. Kitty Hawk Beach is a 25-minute drive if you want the ocean, and Sanctuary Vineyards is 5 minutes the other direction.

About the dock, since it's the thing people ask about before they book.

It's private, it points west, and it takes four chairs without anyone climbing over anyone. We keep three kayaks under the deck — free for guests, no rental shop, no reservation.

The part worth knowing is the wind. Through July and August, Currituck Sound is glass from dawn until roughly 10am, then the breeze comes up and the dock turns into a chair-and-a-drink proposition until evening. After Labor Day that pattern breaks and the water stays workable all day. That's the honest argument for a September or October trip over a July one.

Blue crab holds off this dock through October. The striped bass fall run starts in October and carries into November.

Sam & Omie's in Nags Head has been open since 1937, and it's still where local boat crews eat breakfast before heading out. No reservations, no pretension — whatever came off the boats that morning is what's on the plate at lunch.

That's the pattern our seafood guide keeps running into. The Outer Banks sits where the Atlantic meets Pamlico and Albemarle Sound, and the restaurants worth your money are the ones with actual relationships with the boats.

Two things we'd tell you before you go. When a menu says "local oysters," it usually means Pamlico or Albemarle aquaculture — that industry has taken off in the sounds here, and those oysters hold up against anything on the East Coast. And 1587 in Manteo, the most refined room in the area, takes its name from the year of the Roanoke colony, about 50 minutes south of our driveway.

Nobody books this place for the living room. They book it for the dock, or because Kitty Hawk Beach is a 25-minute drive, or because we don't charge pet fees. Then the week happens, and this is the room it happens in.

The floor plan does most of the work. Kitchen, dining table, and living area are one continuous space, so whoever's cooking stays in the conversation. The table seats six — the same six the house sleeps — so nobody eats standing at the counter.

The oversized Connect Four set by the TV isn't styling. Hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30 on this coast, and even in a good year that means the occasional afternoon where the plan changes. We'd rather the plan B already be in the room.

Late August is peak blue crab on Currituck Sound, and it holds through September. Groups who cook their haul tend to do it here rather than out on the dock — the kitchen opens straight into this room, so nobody has to miss anything.

The listing price is the same on every site. The checkout total isn't.

A six-night September stay here runs about $250 a night — $1,500. Book that through Airbnb or VRBO and the platform adds $150 to $400 in service fees on top, depending on the dates. Book it on grandycove.com and that line doesn't exist. Same house, same dock, same three bedrooms, same six beds.

What $300 in avoided fees actually covers around here: a tasting for the group at Sanctuary Vineyards, five minutes up the road in Jarvisburg, plus dinner for six at Miller's Waterfront. Or a day at H2OBX, ten minutes south. Or you keep it — we don't have an opinion.

September is when the water stops being the busiest thing about this place.

Currituck Sound holds around 72°F through September and about 65°F into October — warmer than the Atlantic on the other side of the bridge, and calm enough most mornings to put a kayak in off our dock without thinking about it. The difference from July is that the traffic is gone.

A few things from the fall guide worth knowing before you plan. Rates here drop into the $220–$280 range after Labor Day, which is the same house for less money. The striped bass fall run picks up in October and keeps going into November. And from late October the Atlantic Flyway migration starts moving through — Currituck Sound sits directly on it, so the waterfowl turn up whether or not you came for them.

One caution the guide also covers: hurricane season officially runs through November 30, so fall trips are worth booking with that in mind.

From the air you can see the thing that's hardest to explain from the ground: there's a pond between the building and Currituck Sound, and then the Sound just keeps going.

Currituck is one of the largest brackish-to-freshwater sounds on the East Coast. No salt to rinse off, no surf, no undertow. That's why the water off our dock works for kayaks and first-time paddlers in a way the Atlantic side never will. It's running 80–84°F right now. By mid-September it settles around 72 and the crowds thin out with it.

The other thing an aerial makes obvious is which side of the Wright Memorial Bridge we're on. That bridge is the line between the mainland and the barrier islands, and it sets the shape of your week. Sanctuary Vineyards and The Cotton Gin are 5 minutes from the driveway. Jockey's Ridge — the largest natural sand dune east of the Mississippi — is 30 minutes east.

Labor Day weekend is 21 days out. Sept 4 through 7 — the last peak weekend on our 2026 calendar.

Waterfront on this stretch of Currituck County is usually spoken for by the last week of August, so if that weekend is in play for you, this is the window. We'd rather say that now than have you check on the 30th.

Here's what that weekend still has going for it. Currituck Sound is holding in the high 70s that first week of September — freshwater, not Atlantic, so it's swimmable right off our dock with nothing to rinse off after. Sanctuary Vineyards is 5 minutes up the road. Wright Brothers Memorial is 25 minutes east across the bridge if the barrier islands are the point of the trip.

The hardest part of a five-day Outer Banks trip isn't choosing what to see. It's the driving.

Most plans park you in a beach town and then run you up and down the same stretch of road all week. We built ours around Grandy instead, and the longest day — Bodie Island Lighthouse, the Manteo waterfront, the NC Aquarium, and Fort Raleigh, where the 1587 colony vanished — still tops out at 45 minutes each way.

Two things we'd flag from the guide. Day 1 has almost nothing on it on purpose: unpack, drop crab lines off our dock, drive to Duck for dinner. Day 2 pairs the Corolla wild horse tour with the Currituck Beach Lighthouse, 214 stairs to the top, sitting a few minutes from where the tours let out.

Day 5 is a pier-fishing morning at Nags Head, or the Sound flats from our dock if nobody wants to get in the car.

The master is the one bedroom with its own door onto the balcony, and in August that's the detail that earns its keep.

Currituck Sound is running 80–84°F right now. It's freshwater, not Atlantic, which catches a lot of people off guard. Overnight the chop flattens out, so if you're up early the water is glass all the way across to the far shore. Wind generally picks up around 10am and that's the end of the calm until evening. Guests who take the master tend to work this out by the second morning and start opening that door before anyone else is awake.

We keep a king in there, nautical bedding, and two rocking chairs on the balcony side of the door. The other two bedrooms are a queen and a pair of twins — three bedrooms, sleeps 6.

Grandy sits on the mainland side of Currituck County, so all of this is quieter than an oceanfront stretch. Wright Brothers Memorial is still only 25 minutes away when you want the barrier islands.
