Today we remember Fannie Heldman, who was born on this day.

Fannie's story is one of Greenville's most enduring legends. The daughter of German immigrant and harness maker George Heldman, she is said to have fallen deeply in love with a young man her own age. According to local tradition, her father forbade the relationship and instead arranged for her to marry an older business associate she did not love.

On the night she was supposed to be married, the story goes that Fannie attempted to take her own life. After escaping those trying to stop her, she drowned in the Reedy River in water said to have been only knee-deep.

Today, Fannie rests in Springwood Cemetery beneath what is perhaps the cemetery's most recognizable monument—an angel-topped tombstone that has become an icon of Greenville history. Many know her as the Guardian Angel of Springwood Cemetery, and over the years visitors have reported seeing a mysterious white mist near both her grave and the Reedy River.

Whether you believe the ghost stories or simply appreciate Greenville's fascinating history, Fannie's tale has captivated generations and remains one of the most memorable stories we share on our tours.
