Today, Sunday December 21, 2025 is the Winter Solstice. But there is a LOT of misinterpretation and misinformation circulating about what this day is and is not.
Hopefully this post will help clarify and correct these common misconceptions.

It is not THE shortest day of the year, but rather ONE OF THE days with the least amount of sunlight (10 hours and 10 minutes) in a period that lasts from December 15, 2025 to December 26, 2025.
See: https://aa.usno.navy.mil/calculated/durdaydark?year=2025&task=0&lat=30.68&lon=-88.11&label=Mobile%2C+AL&tz=6&tz_sign=-1&submit=Get+Data

It is not the date of earliest sunset (@ 4:51 pm CST).
That period already took place from November 25, 2025 to December 9, 2025
See:https://www.southalabama.edu/departments/cwrc/gulfmarineweather/resources/archives/almanac2025.pdf

And it is not THE date of latest sunrise (@ 6:51 am CST).
That actually does not take place until the period from January 4, 2026 to January 14, 2026.

Is mandatory reporting of gamefish species the future of inshore fisheries?

Offshore anglers have become accustomed to the practice of mandatory reporting of many reef species as a way for managers to better assess fishery harvests. But what if that practice extends to inshore species as it will soon be in North Carolina ...

"Those who fish recreationally fish must report any flounder, Red Drum, Striped Bass, Spotted Seatrout (speckled trout), and Weakfish (gray trout) that they catch and keep to the N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries."

New fishing reporting requirements are just a month away — beginning Dec. 1 — and North Carolina’s two fisheries management agencies continue efforts to get the word out, as the requirements impact both commercial and recreational fishermen.
