THREE STATES, VARYING VIEWS — From atop Weverton Cliffs in Maryland, you can take in an incredible downstream perspective of the Potomac River flowing through the gap at Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. This hike takes you up a short stretch of the world famous Appalachian Trail. The higher ridges that are visible across the river are in Virginia.

Still an active rail line, the historic route of the B&O Railroad still runs below this overlook. On a personal level, it's amazing for me to think of my great-great-grandfather marching through Pleasant Valley and reaching this opening in late October 1862 after being outside of Sharpsburg for six weeks following the Battle of Antietam.
