Have you ever read the real story of the John Brown song? Boyd B Stutler pulled it all together in this great little book back in 1960.
The song started as a little tune to make fun of a Massachusetts Sergeant John Brown. When other soldiers and civilians heard the song, they had no idea that it wasn't honoring the abolitionist John Brown. The song took off, and couldn't be stopped.
Ironically, as the song talked about John Brown's body lies a bouldering in the grave, the Sergeant John Brown died in 1862 near Frederick, VA.
