Mahalo to the Palace Theater!

Another one of our proud distribution partners — you can pick up The Hilo Visitor right in the historic lobby of the Palace Theater! Since 1925, this beautiful landmark has been the heart of downtown Hilo's arts and culture scene, and we're honored they help get our publication into the hands of visitors and locals alike.

Big mahalo to Destination Hilo!

You'll find The Hilo Visitor at the Destination Hilo Kiosk — one of the many spots around town helping get our publication into the hands of visitors exploring the Big Island.

We couldn't do what we do without partners like Destination Hilo supporting local media and helping visitors discover the real Hilo. Grateful for the support! 🤙

Discovering Hilo and the Hamakua Coast with kids

For farm fans: Honomu Goat Dairy (30 minutes from Hilo)

Drop into this little roadside farm on your way to/from Akaka Falls. Here you can feed and pet the resident goats and enjoy the most delicious goatmilk treats. Their caramels are insanely tasty and make good, packable gifts. Before you hit the highway, also stop by Mr. Ed’s Bakery, a sweet, family owned bakery with a huge selection of jams, jellies and preserves.

Discovering Hilo and the Hamakua Coast with kids

For those families who love sweet treats and farms, be sure to visit the kitchen at Mahi‘ai Made. Taste handmade, small batch chocolates made from cacao grown on their family’s farm. If you have more time on your hands, book a farm tour with Mahi‘ai Made or Lavaloha, to see where cacao (the fruit used to make chocolate) is grown in Hawai‘i. mahiaimade.com, lavaloha.com

What’s in Season?

Rollinia
Fairly new to the local fruit market, rollinia is exotic and hard to find. Their spiky, bright yellow-green exterior could be the inspiration for a Pokemon character! Flamboyant and Instagram-worthy, rollinia has different flavor profiles depending on their ripeness. Less ripe fruit can have a lemon-y flavor. But as the fruit ripens, it begins to take on a banana cream pie taste. You can find it The Locavore Store

What’s in Season?

Jackfruit
The sweet and pleasing texture of ripe jackfruit is growing in popularity. Jackfruit flavor varies fruit by fruit but can have notes of strawberry, cantaloupe and even banana. The fruit’s immature form has long been popular in vegan/vegetarian cooking as a substitute for poultry/pulled pork. Peak season for jackfruit in Hawai‘i begins in July, with harvest lasting through September. You can find packages of ready-to-eat jackfruit in the Locavore Store fridge.

Only in Hilo: A Sweet Tour of the Island's Best Local Treats

Poi-fait from The Locavore Store

Made fresh at the Locavore Store in downtown Hilo, these poi-fait cups are a fresh take on poi—the Hawaiian staple food. The base is made of locally grown poi from around the island, and then topped with coconut cream, fresh fruit (or savory toppings), macadamia nuts and apple
bananas.
