The parrot fish is the inspiration behind so much design in Aruba— and rightfully so
When you walk on the stunning white sand beaches of Aruba, you have the parrot fish to thank!
They have hard beak-like teeth used to scrape and feed on the algae that grows on coral. Often times they consume parts of the coral which cannot be digested. But not to worry, their pharyngeal mill, or grinding plates, pulverize the coral into a fine powder which is excreted by the parrot fish creating brilliant white sand.
This process of bioerosion is crucial for tropical ecosystems and helps create the soft, smooth sand we enjoy today.
Plus, the white color of the sand actually reflects the sun’s rays— so the sand stays cool and never feels too hot to walk on!
