It’s Wondrous Wednesday at Spectacular Journeys, and today we’re recalling our visit to one of Sardinia’s greatest mysteries—the nuraghi. More than 7,000 nuraghi are still known across Sardinia today, while archaeologists believe there may originally have been even more scattered throughout the island. These extraordinary stone towers were built by the Nuragic civilization beginning more than 3,500 years ago, using massive stones fitted together without mortar. Their exact purpose is still debated, adding to the mystery of one of the Mediterranean’s most fascinating ancient cultures.

The most important and best-preserved example is Su Nuraxi di Barumini, Sardinia’s UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its massive central tower originally stood more than 18 meters high and was surrounded by four additional towers, defensive walls, courtyards and an extensive village of circular stone dwellings. Walking through its narrow passages and ancient chambers is like stepping back thousands of years in time and discovering another remarkable side of Sardinia beyond its spectacular coastline.

It’s Memorable Meals Monday at Spectacular Journeys, and today we highlight an extraordinary dining experience at Musciora in Alghero, where Sardinian tradition is transformed into something truly special. At the heart of the restaurant is the father-and-son team of Tonino and Danilo Delrio. Tonino brings a lifetime of knowledge of Sardinian cuisine and deep relationships with the fishermen, farmers and local producers who provide some of the island’s finest ingredients, while Danilo has become known for designing a complete dining experience around those ingredients—overseeing everything from the service and atmosphere to the w**e and presentation. Each course tells the story of Sardinia through beautifully prepared local products, contemporary techniques and unexpected details. Even the table itself becomes part of the experience, with distinctive artisan-style plates, bowls and serving pieces chosen to complement each dish, creating a presentation that feels almost like a work of art. Musciora is not simply a restaurant—it is a carefully choreographed journey through the flavors, traditions and creativity of Sardinia.

It’s Foodie Friday at Spectacular Journeys, and today we celebrate one of our favorite Sicilian traditions: the classic summer breakfast of granita and brioche.

The very first time we visited Sicily, our tour guide brought us to his hometown, where his father owned a small café and pastry shop. When he asked what we wanted, we did what felt natural and ordered cappuccinos, cookies, and pastries. But as we looked around, we noticed that nearly everyone else was enjoying granita and brioche—tearing off pieces of the soft brioche, dipping and scooping up the icy granita, and savoring every bite.

When we left, we asked about what seemed to us like such an unusual breakfast tradition. That was the moment we learned about the beloved Sicilian summer ritual of granita and brioche, and from that day forward, we were hooked. Now, whenever we are in Sicily, we try to enjoy it every single morning. It has become one of those special Sicilian traditions we look forward to every time we return.

To every guide, driver, hotel, restaurant, vendor, and collaborator who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make each journey seamless and extraordinary, we are deeply grateful. And somehow, through more than 60 days of travel, we were blessed with nearly perfect weather, beautiful sunsets, sparkling seas, and one incredible day after another.

As the sun sets on our unforgettable Charming Calabria Extension, we bid a heartfelt farewell to those who combined this beautiful journey with our Pretty Puglia tour, while two couples continue on with us to meet the rest of our group for two spectacular weeks in Sicily.

Calabria gave us everything we hoped for and more. From our stay in gorgeous Tropea, to a magical farm-to-table pasta-making experience in the hills, to cruising the dazzling Coast of the Gods toward Capo Vaticano, every day brought another incredible memory. We wandered the enchanting seaside villages of Scilla and Pizzo, enjoyed a fabulous lunch right on the water, soaked in breathtaking coastal views, and indulged in Pizzo’s famous tartufo, the decadent dessert that was born right here.

Beautiful villages, brilliant blue seas, unforgettable food, authentic experiences and wonderful people made this extension truly spectacular. Calabria, you were absolutely Spectacular!

It’s Memorable Meals Monday and Spectacular Journeys’ small group Puglia tour enjoyed a truly special dining experience at the iconic Grotta Palazzese cave restaurant in Polignano a Mare. Dramatically carved into a natural sea cave high above the Adriatic, the setting was absolutely unforgettable, with breathtaking views of the turquoise water and cliffs surrounding us. The magical atmosphere was made even more memorable with beautiful live music, wonderful food, and one of those extraordinary settings that turns dinner into an experience we will remember for years to come.n Grotta Palazzese

Where in Europe are Spectacular Journeys clients this week?

Our Spectacular Journeys small group is having an incredible time exploring beautiful Puglia, while a family of five is making memories in Portugal with stays in Lisbon and the Algarve. Two more couples are also traveling through Portugal, experiencing everything from Porto all the way down to the Algarve.

Across Italy, the adventures continue! One couple is starting in magical Venice before heading to the colorful villages of the Cinque Terre, magnificent Rome and the breathtaking Amalfi Coast. Another couple who traveled with us to Sicily last year loved their experience so much that they returned this year with their entire family of nine!
