In the late 1980s, fish filleters were given the nickname "whackers" because they literally "whacked" (or filleted) halibut. Homer, Alaska is known as the halibut fishing capital of the world, and gradually fisherman came to use the nickname "Butts" as a shorthand to refer to the species, halibut.
