Harris County renewed a contract for 480 license plate cameras in May 2026. Guadalupe County, Hood County, Austin, and San Marcos ended theirs. Conroe residents want it on the November ballot. 🤔

Here's the detail that surprised us: most plate cameras around Houston aren't owned by the county or the city at all. Texas Tribune reporting from August 2026 found they belong to HOAs, MUDs, neighborhood associations, retailers, and private property owners.

So if you sit on a board or manage a property, this isn't someone else's debate. And the real question isn't the camera — it's who is allowed to search the data it collects.
