🌈 Happy Pride Month 🌈

Courtney and I are lucky. We’re mostly surrounded by family and friends who love and support us. In a lot of ways, we “fit the molds” that make it easier for a society to accept us. We don’t take that for granted, and we’re deeply aware that’s not everyone’s reality.

We still travel to places where our marriage is illegal. We do it carefully with trusted local guides, vetted conversations beforehand, a lot of intentionality, and sometimes as “friends” or even “sisters.” Some people don’t want to travel to those places, and we completely respect that. For us, the list of countries where same-sex marriage isn’t recognized is too long, and the hostility too loud even here at home, to let legality alone be our compass. So we go thoughtfully, and we go anyway.

But let’s be honest about what Pride is for

It’s for the person whose family stopped calling after they came out. For the one still in the closet because coming out isn’t safe where they live. For the community member who lost friends, lost housing, lost themselves trying to survive in spaces that refused to make room for them. For every person whose right to exist is still being debated by people who’ve never had to fight for theirs. The ability to live openly, to love freely, to be married should never be up for a vote.

We are someone’s token gay couple, we’re sure of it. Proof that someone can say they’re “fine with it” while their votes, their silence, and their private conversations tell a very different story. The gap between what people perform and what they actually believe continues to do real damage to real people and is why pride month matters.

To any of our followers struggling to live your truth, we see you, and we love you.

If travel feels complicated because of who you are or who you love — whether that’s fear of a destination abroad or just needing to know someone will handle it with care — that’s exactly what we’re here for.

This month and always, please choose love. Choose love that is louder than your comfort. Lead with empathy and kindness. If you don’t know what to say, say nothing and just be there. A perfect script was never the point. Showing up is.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month 🧠

Before Ragan Luxury Travel, Courtney and I built careers in mental health. She’s a therapist. I’m a psychiatric NP. We’ve sat across from people in their darkest moments and their brightest breakthroughs. We’ve watched people reclaim their life, find their footing, finally exhale. We’ve seen what’s possible when mental health becomes a priority, not an afterthought.

That perspective shapes everything we do — including why we believe so deeply in the power of travel. The kind where you slow down, step away from your roles and responsibilities, and let somewhere new heal a part of you that words can’t always reach.

And then there was our amazing guide, Miguel.

He was there the moment we arrived. Warm, present, and immediately, inexplicably, familiar. Like someone you’ve known for years showing up in a place you’ve never been.

Miguel is an internist. He spent several years caring for people, trained through Cuba’s free education system, and chose three years ago to step into tourism instead.

Over the course of our trip he taught us about Cuban history, the revolution, the relationship with the United States — all of it told not from a textbook but from the lived experience of someone who has watched it shape his entire life. He was honest and thoughtful. By the middle of the trip we had inside jokes. By the end, he felt like family.

We’ve been home for a few days now. We’re already in touch with Miguel. And we miss him in the way you only miss someone who genuinely got to you.

This is the biggest and best problem travel creates. You go somewhere, you open yourself up, and people walk into your life and stay there. The hardest part of leaving isn’t the place. It’s knowing you might not see the people again. We hope that isn’t true for Miguel. Cuba has our hearts and we hope to go back.

But here’s what we want to leave you with.

Miguel is a doctor who loves to crack a joke. Andy is a farmer who hitches up an ox cart with the same hands that fed us lunch. Idalma is a grandmother beaming over her first grandchild. Daisy is doing the math on a slow season and figuring out how to make it work. Georgi drives his family’s pink convertible through the streets of a city he loves with everything he has.

These are not stories from another world. These are people. Families. Humans doing exactly what all of us are doing — trying to make it work, trying to find joy, trying to be seen.

Cuba is people. And they are waiting… warmly and graciously for the world to remember that.
