Grizzly bears in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem consume upwards of 200 different species of plants, animals, fungi, and insects. In this case this gorgeous bear was getting lucky trying her hand at "mousing", a behavior we typically see in coyotes!

The Junction Butte wolf pack meets back up after dispersing from a morning of feeding and chasing grizzlies off of their bison kill. Most wolf packs are made up of loose family groups. They’re matriarchal and fiercely loyal to their families. Wolves have a large spectrum of behaviors and emotions, and they are constantly surprising us with their capacity for emotions.
This was a great morning watching the sillier side of these wild wolves.

More bison rut action! This bull is doing what’s called “tending”, where he stays with this particular cow until she is ready to mate. These tending bonds are the bison’s way of going steady while still staying with the larger herd!

“Look ma, no hooves!” 🦬🦬🦬
August in Yellowstone National Park means the bison rut is in full swing! We caught this bull wallowing over the weekend.

Bison wallowing has several purposes:
• A dominance display to other bulls that they are strong and will aggressively fight for mating rights.
• Bulls will urinate in the dirt then roll around in it to scent mark to the cows and other bulls.
• Relief from a hot August day! This cools them down, helps shed any remaining winter coat, and helps prevent insect bites.

A drive through Hayden or Lamar Valleys will reveal countless wallows which act as micro ecosystems for plants and invertebrates.
