A Local Legend: John Mionczynski
John is a guardian of the wild spirit of the west. Whether he’s living among bighorn sheep, foraging ancient medicinal plants, or preserving the oral histories of the Shoshone Sheepeaters, he lives in a way that feels timeless.
Spending time with John expands your heart. It deepens your understanding of the interconnectedness of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, piques your imagination of tribal life both today and 200 years ago, and introduces your senses to tastes and sounds you didn’t know existed.
We are infinitely grateful for our time in Dubois learning about Sheepeater hunting techniques, the medicinal power of Osha root, and the stories etched into ancient red rock petroglyphs.
Next month, we’re headed back out for three days of camping in the Red Desert to dive even deeper. It’s people like John who transform a trip into a true immersion into the landscape and history of Wyoming.
