Scarcely 160 years ago, Jackson Hole, Wyoming was home throughout the summer and fall seasons only to small bands of Native Americans and a few fur trappers. Later, the trappers and Indians were replaced by homesteaders who managed to endure harsh winters here while raising beef cattle. But Jackson Hole's future ("hole" was trapper slang for a mountain valley) was determined when those homesteader

s realized that dudes (rancher slang for summer tourists) were easier to keep than cattle. Thus, dude ranches were established in the valley and quickly caught on as tourists made Jackson Hole their summer vacation destination.

Beartooth Highway never disappoints with its sweeping mountain views, alpine lakes, colorful wildflowers, and abundance of wildlife. If you're fortunate to visit in summer, you might even catch a glimpse of a mountain goat kid.

Did you know…?

Somewhere out on the Wyoming sagebrush plain, thousands of Americans once faced decisions that could change the course of their lives.

At a spot known as Parting of the Ways, pioneers traveling west by wagon across the frontier, faced a choice. Stay on the established route or travel on a riskier shortcut across miles of dry desert with little water and no guarantees.

Families stood here. Friends said goodbye here. Some likely never saw each other again.

Today, the sagebrush still stretches to the horizon, and the silence still feels enormous.

Parting of the Ways, listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places and located on public lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management, reminds us that American history was sometimes shaped in quiet landscapes where ordinary people made extraordinary decisions.
