This rock didn't form where this picture was taken. Peekaboo Slot Canyon, or Red Canyon, near Kanab, is carved into windblown desert sandstone, so no ocean involved, but flash floods drag rock in from all over the watershed.

That's why limestones like the one in the photo show up there, carrying tiny white star shapes that don't belong to any local formation.

Those stars are crinoids, marine animals nicknamed "sea lilies," which means that somewhere upstream, land that's bone dry today used to be seafloor.

A lot of people treat Kanab as just a home base, somewhere to sleep before heading out to The Wave or White Pocket the next morning. What they miss is that Kanab itself has plenty worth seeing, without the permit lottery or the hours of dirt road!

That's the idea behind the Ultimate Kanab Tour. We visit Peekaboo Slot Canyon, the swirling sandstone of the White Wave, a dinosaur tracksite with prints still visible in the rock, plus ancient rock art along the way, and the Red Knoll hill.

So before you drive hours for the next big bucket-list stop, take into account this info: https://dreamlandtours.net/day-tours/kanab/ultimate-kanab-tour/

This is one of the most photographed spots in the Southwest, but also one of the least visited, because getting there means 50+ miles of rough dirt road and then 7.5 off-trail miles with no marked path.

What's waiting at the end are these narrow fingers of Lake Powell curling into red and white sandstone, still enough most mornings to mirror the rock back at itself.

Reflection Canyon is one of the stops on our photography workshops with Cody York.

Remember yesterday's post? Here's one of the secrets behind a night shot like that.

This is PhotoPills, an app that maps the sun and moon's path onto the actual location so you can plan a shot down to the minute, instead of guessing.

The rest is just showing up at the right minute!

If the Wave is spectacular during the day, imagine it like this!

The day-use permit for Coyote Buttes North runs a full calendar day, midnight to midnight, so as long as you're not camping overnight, staying out until the stars come out is technically fair game.

And let's be honest: during summer, it's a real relief to hike in the dark instead of the heat!

Most groups don't get the chance since standard tour schedules run on set daytime hours, but our private tours can be timed differently if that's what you're after.

This is Jacob Hamblin Arch, named after a Mormon pioneer and missionary in the 1800s, that was known for building relationships with Native American tribes across this part of the Southwest.

Anyway, this arch is roughly 130 feet across and over 100 feet high, carved into Navajo sandstone. It's been eroding for something like 180 million years!

During our backpacking trips in Coyote Gulch, we sometimes pitch our own tents here! Standing under something that size makes the whole hike in worth it.

By now, you've likely heard about the flash flooding that tore through the Grand Canyon this weekend.

Every Dreamland guide and guest is accounted for and safe throughout.

Our hearts are with the broader community right now - with the visitors and search teams still working to find those who are missing, and with everyone whose weekend turned into something no one was prepared for.

This land we love so much can turn in an instant. That's a truth every one of our guide carries with them on every trip, and it's on our minds hard tonight.

If you have someone out there, or you're part of the search and rescue effort, please know we're thinking of you.

With gratitude,

The Dreamland crew

There are no words for Toroweap Overlook, but there are some for the road to get there: sixty-one miles of dirt, with the last stretch being rough enough to chew through a tire, if you're not paying attention. Oh, and zero cell service the whole way.

Then the river's just there, straight down, 3,000 feet below.

Does it sound worth the drive? Then check the details: https://dreamlandtours.net/day-tours/grand-canyon/toroweap-tuweep-viewpoint/

Every guide who runs an overnight trip for us holds a Utah Food Handler Permit, the same food safety training and certification required of anyone cooking or serving food professionally in the state!

It covers safe food temperatures, storage, and handling, whether you're in a restaurant kitchen or, in our case, cooking dinner off two propane burners in the middle of the desert.

Dasher supervises most of these training sessions from under the stove, though her contribution is mostly moral support😜
