Sometimes the magic is in looking up!!

Slot canyons grab all your attention with the walls and the curves and the colors, but every now and then you have to stop, lean your head back, and check out what's happening above you too.

Definitely worth it!

Star trails over South Coyote Buttes, taken during a rare night-time visit to this amazing spot.

You can fall into a rabbit hole figuring out how a photo like this is made, exposures, stacking, tripods, the math of rotating planets, but people forget the only thing that really matters.

None of it works without genuinely dark skies. No streetlights, no city glow, nothing for miles.

Out here you've still got that...

The desert always looks empty, but the second you start paying attention to the sand, you realize there's a whole rush hour you missed.

First photo here is a snake track: one long wavy S-shape pulled smooth across the surface with no footprints at all, and if you crouch down close you can sometimes even see the imprint of their scales pressed into the sand.

Second one is a lizard: tiny prints on both sides with a thin line straight down the middle, which is just the tail dragging behind.

Anyone else play this game on their hikes?

Sacred datura blooms in the evening and it's one of the most striking flowers you'll find out here, those big white trumpet-shaped petals can be the size of your hand.

The catch is that the whole plant is toxic. Indigenous communities across the Southwest have used it ceremonially for a very long time, but always with respect, because the dosage between a sacred experience and serious poisoning is razor thin (people have died from messing around with this plant casually).

So if you spot one, enjoy how pretty it is and keep your hands to yourself!!

Bret and Marjorie met here at Dreamland. They got married in Belgium a while back - we celebrated from afar - and now they're retiring, together.
Bret shared 14 years with Dreamland. Guests have asked for him by name for as long as anyone can remember, he's a walking encyclopedia of this desert, and he's the steady hand who trained a good chunk of the guides you ride with today.

Marjorie spent 12 with Dreamland. The friendships she built with guests took her around the world, and for the last few years she took on and expertly ran the nuanced logistics that kept our overnight and backpacking trips on track.

The place won't feel quite the same without them. Thank you Bret & Marjorie ❤️

There's a spot near Kanab where you can find hundreds of dinosaur footprints pressed into the rock.

About 180 million years ago this place was a tiny oasis in the middle of a massive desert, so creatures came by to drink.

Big carnivores left three-toed prints, the ancestors of the long-necks left huge ones, and even tiny mammals the size of mice walked across the wet sand.

The footprints are all still there, and we take guests around!

Any guesses where this is? CLUE: https://dreamlandtours.net/day-tours/kanab/slot-dino-combo/

One of our favorite tours starts at Peek-a-boo, a slot canyon carved out of deep red sandstone, and ends at White Wave, where the same exact rock turns chalky white.

Same Navajo sandstone, but at some point underground, water seeped through White Wave and rinsed the iron out of it. The iron is what makes the rock red, so without it you get white.

👀 Two completely different worlds in one morning or afternoon! Check the details here: https://dreamlandtours.net/day-tours/kanab/slot-canyon-white-wave/
