This rock didn't form where this picture was taken. Peekaboo Slot Canyon, or Red Canyon, near Kanab, is carved into windblown desert sandstone, so no ocean involved, but flash floods drag rock in from all over the watershed.
That's why limestones like the one in the photo show up there, carrying tiny white star shapes that don't belong to any local formation.
Those stars are crinoids, marine animals nicknamed "sea lilies," which means that somewhere upstream, land that's bone dry today used to be seafloor.
